Army National Guard Reserves[views:7359][posts:102]__________________________________________ [Jun 2,2009 11:11pm - MillenialKingdom ""] So, I'm considering the Army National Guard Reserves as a career change. So far in my young life, my seemingly only options are to continue to search for full-time work, go back to school in the fall (to where I'm already accepted), or try the military. Anyone with any military experience on this board please share your experiences. |

_____________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 8:59am - the_reverend ""] wait, I'm sorry... you might go to Afghanistan or Pakistan. |
_________________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 9:15am - largefreakatzero ""] Or even North Korea at this point. I have a buddy that is a career Marine -- Capt. of 1st recon. He digs it, but he is also fucking nuts. |

____________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 10:02am - arilliusbm ""] I don't have military experience although I heavily considered it after I graduated college because I wanted to become an officer (not enough people in the military have degrees it seems). But as a father as well, I'll make a rare serious rttp statement. let me tell you right now that you won't be able to spend that much time with your kid as you'd like, and that you're going to have to make some serious personal sacrifices. Althouh the Reserve isn't really as brutal/time consuming as joining the marines, air force, etc.. it's still going to be a big deal if something happens. so think about what's best for your kid, not for yourself |

______________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 10:20am - the_reverend ""] if something happens? if? isn't something already happening? let's talk to all the reservist that are dying in iraq. I think that if you already have kid(s) joining something like this isn't the best idea if you want to see them grow up at all. Especially if you are unmarried to the baby momma. Honestly, this is something that you should have figured out before you started making babies. |
____________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 10:21am - arilliusbm ""] something is already happening, but something BIG is bound to happen soon. when that big thing happens, WE GONNA GET DRAFTED BITCHES! |

______________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 10:24am - the_reverend ""] I would say: #1 Job = spend lots of time with kid, but in 20 years you get a watch and a map to the golf courses in the area #2 School = around for kid, but busy and broke as fuck for 4+ years #3 Military = deployed and away from kid for 1.5 years to life. Then when you come back you will start with #2. If it were me, I would go with #2. Just think of all the college tail. |
_________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 10:26am - darkwor ""] You're already accepted to school - go to school. Get an education. Then join the military if you want, become an officer, you'll have more options. Being a poor student working your ass off for 4+ years is worth it. You don't have to limit your job options when you get out. I have 3 friends that joined the military after school; one joined the army, became a ranger, and died in a helicopter in Afghanistan. The other went to the air force, probably for a career. The last joined the Navy, and said it was the worst choice he had ever made, his service ends in a few months and he can't wait to go to school. Stay in school kids. |

We all did since Obama can't do shit just like McCain. @aril: look up stats on the war. I believe that there are 10K army reservists in iraq. Recruiters make it sound awesome, but all the people wanting to fuck hookers in germany end up eating sand in iraq. |

_________________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 1:48pm - MillenialKingdom ""] I have been thinking of my daughter which is why I'm not making any official choices on this matter. It's really difficult because while I love being a father, I need to have a career to help support her. Even if I was going to school, finding work is just as hard as it is now. I'm supposed to be seeing a recruiter next week and just discussing my options and getting general info. |
___________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 2:01pm - arilliusbm ""] you have to think in both short term and long term. if you have a supportive family that can help you with anything, then I'd suggest going to school. look up night courses. look up online courses. short term solution would be getting a job now, but you don't want to get stuck at a job that you don't like. college (especially getting an associates or bachelor's degree) does not mean that you'd get an awesome paying job right away. but it will at least help. sadly, a bachelor's degree today is not what it was worth 20 years ago. anything master's or above is what people REALLY look for these days. either way you do it, you're going to be so busy in the next few years of your life. |
_____________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 2:08pm - the_reverend ""] meeting with a recruiter isn't what it used to be. Have fun signing up as they usually badger/fight/reason with you until you agree to sign stuff. If you sign anything there at all, have fun in iraq and not seeing your daughter for 1.5years to life. |

The military is not the answer to your prayers. Go to school, get your degree, and get a job that will provide some stability. Fuck, get two if you need to. Your kid will be way better off than if you come back from Iraq/Afghanistan/etc. all fucked up or dead. |

_________________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 5:22pm - MillenialKingdom ""] Well, like I said, I'm keeping my options open and I'm only meeting with this guy to talk about my situation and get some general info. ______________________________ [Jun 3,2009 7:52pm - Hoser ""] 1st of all, don't listen to Rev. he hasn't the slightest idea. He wears Birkenstocks for Christs sake. 2nd, it's the reserves, the last place that the country looks to a battle hardened unit. 3rd, there is nothing at all wrong with serving the country that has provided you with the very blanket of security that you were raised under. 4th, DO NOT under any circumstances take anyone's opinion unless they have served. Otherwise they are no better than the "trained liars" that have a quota to fill (which is BS by the way Rev, I don't know whether you're delusional or get your info from chumps who have never really been there.) 5th, I gave 6 years of my life to the active duty Marine Corps. and another 4 in reserves, and have never been more proud of my sacrifices to this country. All as a Rifleman with 2/2 Echo Co. CLNC Finally, make your own decisions. Full Metal Jacket is about the Marine Corps., not the Army Reserves or the National Guard. Those 2 are a completely different animal with far less training (not to discredit those who serve in any way.) Make your own decisions, the hippy fags on this board piss on our flag on a daily basis through their shitty dialogue, and demeaning attitude toward any man who serves the flag. Yet they live in complete security because of it. Get used to it, you'll never be appreciated by the ignorant and fortunate, which are one in the same. If you decide to go, you have my support 100%. |

_________________________________________ [Jun 3,2009 9:59pm - MillenialKingdom ""] Thanks, Hoser. I figured you'd be in this thread eventually. I am definitely interested in the NG but want the Reserves so I don't get deployed. That's all I'm really worried about. Having either a diploma or experience in the military are both pluses on a resume and I'm going to get either one. |
