not sure why u guys like this band so much. been a pop bands since 90. sucks. this album sucks. jerry is fat, balding and dyes his hair blonde. and the new singer looks like lenny cravits. every song sounds the same on the new album, and it also has an emo cover of a heart. i mean if u really sit down and think about it this band sucks and only got popular because they sing about drugs

I retract my previous liking for this album due to many valid points by this highly respected musical critic.

Haven't listened yet. But Sean Kinney is a phenomenal drummer. He could play on a polka album and I'd give it an honest listen.

Well, I'll listen to Nirvana all day actually. I guess I'm really dumb, fuck. Life is more and more challenging by the day.

just listened to it again. I think there's about 3-4 fillers. but all others are solid, gloomy tracks.
a solid comeback release. I'd give it 92/100 - definitely worthy of top 10 of 2009

i actually have that book that i received as gift for xmas but i refuse to read it out of respect for a dead musician.

I've got those diaries too. I read most of it, skimmed through some. Dude was somewhat of a unique character.
The whole concept is kind of strange though. scanning someone's diaries and making a book out of it for profit. that's like if someone took yuqi hu's private conversations and exposed thos... oh, wait.

fuck this band. being fat, going bald, and bleaching your hair blonde totally ruins any skill one may have as a guitarist, vocalist, or songwriter. no fat balding blonde dudes ever wrote a good lick, let alone album.

Yea, I was initially impressed, but I'm starting to think this album has more fillers than their previous albums. But the good songs are really good.

I agree with you on all of the above, with the exception of "Last of my kind" I think it's decent, definitely the least good song on the album though

Your Decision, Private Hell and Black Gives Way To Blue are the only songs on the album I really care about; everything else is good but this album just didn't grab me the way I was hoping it would.

This entire Cd is just amazing. I got it the day it was released and I still listen to it every damn day that goes by on the MP3 player at work. The harmonies and Jerry's playing is just great. It's dark, super depressing and is easily as good as the very early stuff they wrote. Moody as all hell. Jerry has always been AIC as far as writing...so in my eyes AIC still lives. Jerry is still a God!

I dig it. I think it's a good come back record that doesn't reek of the usual money-making motives, or "can't let go" attitude. I have a feeling that their next one will be significantly better (if there is a next one).

The songs, for the most part, are great. "Last of My Kind" is the weakest for sure. "Private Hell", "When the Sun Rose Again", and "All Secrets Known" are my favorites. "Acid Bubble" is so fucking filthy and sludgy... Love it. In general, I dig how slow and grimey everything sounds.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Duvall's vocals on their own, but blended with Jerry's, I think he does a good job of doing the AIC harmony sound. It's actually pretty scary how much it sounds like the old stuff at times. I was happy to find out that Cantrell does the majority of the lead vocals though. Great hearing his guitar sound again as well. He's probably my favorite modern rock guitarist (I certainly rip off his soloing style more than any other).

All in all, a very sincere effort, and that's coming from someone who really didn't want to like it, as I'm a HUGE Layne Staley fan. A pleasant surprise.

i like the fact that alice in chains when their other singer died that they still wanted to keep their original style and try not to go all grr on everyone long live alice in chains.

So go play in the solo cantrell thread.

This is officially a FUZZY AFRO LENNY KRAVITZ LOOKING MOTHERFUCKER only Alice in Chains thread.

And new album is awesome. Really is their best stuff, I agree. Much like Facelift, Jerry had PLENTY of time to write great songs. Not a bad one on there.

Alice in Chains are playing at the Comcast Center in August, two days after Black Sabbath actually, along with Jane's Addiction, Coheed & Cambria and a shit ton of other artists.

I'm somewhat considering going, but I don't know. How often does AiC tour, does anyone here know? If they tour every year or so, then I may just wait for their next independent tour since I imagine tickets will be about the same price either way.

my big sister took me to Lotfullalozahs in 94 and I saw the real AiC along with RATM, Porno for Pyros and tons of other awesome grunge bands of the day...

I also saw Jerry Cantrell in like 2001 and he had some Lenny Kravitz lookalike going Laynes parts and he sounded perfect. great show cause he did mostly AiC songs...

I'd consider going to see the show at the Comcast Center but I want to go see Sabbath too and I doubt I could manage both.

Sabbath WITH AiC would be fucking awesome.
