I read further in the b9 thread. Looks like he's going to pretty much do exactly like Redrum and try to keep things "underground" as in flyers only, keeping things more discreet, etc. Which all the b9 kids thought was stupid and a cop out. But honestly, unless you have an entertainment license, that is the only way you can do it with any hope for longevity.

I give the kid credit for trying to do something for Providence...it needs it. But the more I read into this, the more I am not surprised it didn't work out.

I'm reading this thread and half the people on there are like "fuck this guy, he's a faggot let's beat him up"...no wonder this venue got shut down. Who the hell wants that kind of attitude in a city where so many scenes have been united(or ANY music scene for that matter)? Have these people never heard of Providence Declares War? Oh wait, they have because Verse was on it...and all their fans were the ones acting like dicks during Dropdead's set...and now hearing that one of my favorite places to go to shows is in serious jeapordy?

IF they plan on being "discreet"...they might wanna take down the ridiculous giant fucking christmas light arrow pointing right at the front door....

...right, because the Providence police and fire department are looking out for our safety

The Station was in West Warwick, not Providence.

Not to mention all the places in Olneyville getting shut down a few years ago happened AFTER the Station fire anyway.

I'm just interpreting from what a guy who is pissed off at the person still running the space thinks that guy will do. So, obviously I don't really know what's going on. But it's just a theory.

However, that light does sound like a ridiculous thing to use for an illegal showspace.

I'm pretty sure that most of the people who posted on that b9 thread have very little to do with Providence, in actuality. A lot of them are from the whole Brockton scene...thus, the gorilla posturing and threats about booking shows on friday.

Yeah, well a lot of them say they live in Rhode Island and bash the "artfag noise scene"...you know, maybe it's not their thing. Not all the bands in Providence are my thing. The problem I have with this is that they don't seem to understand that the shows in Providence around that area are supposed to be underground and they have had large areas of Olneyville shut down by cops before. I've never seen a fight or anything even resembling a fight at an Olneyville show. The thing is, if you're going to plow into an area full of people who were having shows there first, you should probably respect the fact that some people are trying to keep it low key and not get shut down instead of painting a huge graffiti mural on the side of your building. I never saw cops drive by at Redrum shows, there were no cops around at the Bathtub Shitter show, yet when this place opens up, there's cops all over the place. At the Anal Cunt show last month, one of my friends was walking around outside to get a drink from a convinience store or something and some cop pulls him over to ask questions then concludes it by saying "Yeah, you're actually one of the least suspicious people here"...like he knows that...like anyone else around there knows they're "suspicious"...

I guess you're right though. But while they may be part of that Brockton scene, they should probably realize that if it's so hard to keep something open in Providence like they say, maybe they should take a hint from the people who have actually managed to keep something open for years.

oh, trust me. I'm not defending them at all. I think there's a lot of ignorance going on in that thread from all angles. They talked about how the other venues felt threatened by a new venue...maybe this is true...maybe it's just what they want to believe. But if they asked these other venues, Redrum in particular considering the similar situation and the immediate interest that Redrum has in the way places like that run, maybe the advice they would have gotten would have saved the venue.

I hope this doesn't screw redrum...that would be awful.

Yeah, in the end screwing Redrum is the part I'm most worried about too because right now that's my favorite place to see a show in Providence.

the point i was trying to make is that venues that should be shut down, like the station, don't get shut down until its too late. and that underground or illegal venues that are not a safety issue and are a positive impact on the community do get shut down.

needless to say, there are a lot of chuckleheads out there who really know how to ruin a good thing for everyone else. i have no idea how to hold these people responsible or make them realise the ramifications of their actions. chances are, they never will learn or grow up. so the best thing we can do now is regroup and keep plugging away. afterall, its what this is all about.

i don't really understand what's going on and why there has to be such a discreet approach to putting on a show in RI. someone said something about an entertainment license? are these things really so hard to acquire? the post on b9 doesn't exist anymore so i'm finding all this out through you fuckers. is it a matter of safety, formality, or legality that keeps local shows from going on?

[Dec 26,2006 3:06pm - brian_dc ""]
it's not very easy to get an entertainment license in RI. It would be damn near impossible in Olneyville just because the area doesn't have the best reputation.
