_________________________________ [Sep 12,2011 10:01am - xmikex ""] My review: The first reaction I had when I walked in was that the show was infinitely better organized than I had thought. I'm very happy to admit I was wrong about it (although if it had rained we would have been right back to square one). WITTR had a series of laughable banners (a gopher in a forest scene with the word "KILL" hidden inside it), but there were flood lights behind the banners that set some pretty sweet ambiance for the space. Worms... I was a little disappointed for several reasons: 1. just as I thought the outdoor space isn't very conducive of BM sound. All I really heard was bass and vocals. 2. The singers antics are a little silly and make it hard to take them seriously. 3. They had shirts, cloth patches, and leather patches with the same Windows old english stock font text on it. I didn't see any demos because apparently listening to recorded music isn't kvlt. 4. I was really really looking forward to seeing them live and felt like I got cheated a little. I'll def seek them out again though. Halfway through Thou's set I forgot I was even watching a band. Thou strikes me as a group of dudes who skipped Black Flag as teenagers and jumped right to Burnt By the Sun. Both my roommates go crazy over this band, and I always tease them that they're the BM Tony's Cantina house band because all I've ever heard from them on record are Nirvana covers. Their original stuff just bores me to tears. WITTR are rockstar nerds that take wayyyy too long to do everything. But when they actually get going I really like what they do. During a lot of the lengthier "look how brooding I am" ambient interludes they definitely lost people's attention. The whole time I was looking up to where the edge of the building met the skyline, and watched the cloudly slowly cascade over the sky and it was cool as shit to experience to some quality hipster BM (while the rest of the Providence shitlocks and denim jacket "metal" scene did a Natty Ice about it). The best part was when the sound guy played Leonard Cohen at the end and I left to get greasy hot dogs at NY Systems. I hope if the people who put on the show read this, and my criticisms about the show they see it as the constructive criticisms of someone who really values their music watching/listening experience, and not just complaining about things. Thank you very much for putting on this show. |

I want to see Thou, but missed 90% of their set. I am not that big of a fan of wolves in the throne room, but think they put on decent shows. aside from looking at the back of everyones' heads, they played a good show regardless of how bland their music was to me. I did not like their attitudes towards the crowd and photographers, and it seemed that they had a rockstar attitude throughout the whole show. the crowd was as expected. the place the show was at was actually pretty cool and better than I thought. overall, i wish more shows happen here, although not plausible because of the oncoming cold weather |

Hmmm, I don't recall ever criticizing the weather or the byob but I must have otherwise you wouldn't have been able to fire out that very poignant buttdart critique. Good one. I thought the sound guy did a great job with what he had to work with, and if definitely improved throughout the night. The sound might have had some issues but it was still better than expected. Being outside for the show rules. I only wish the bands used the loading dock as a stage instead of playing on the ground. It's not bad when bands play on ground level at a smaller show but with this many people it was totally boring as shit to watch the back of peoples heads if you weren't right up front. Wasn't that impressed with wittr, we have plenty of bands that do it better around here. |

____________________________________ [Sep 12,2011 12:58pm - chrisREX ""] I thought it was a really cool show. First band was ok. Thou were great. I didn't know them before the show, but I was thoroughly crushed. Curious to see if I will like them as much on record. Wolves' sound was awesome. I was really surprised. You heard all the melodies and nuances of the songs. The only other time I have seen them was at Maryland Deathfest and all you could hear was chord changes. As for their performance, it was up and down. I really like the long ass song in the middle, but not so much the book ends. I probably would of been more into it if I was able to see the band at all. I really enjoyed seeing a show there, would go to another if it happens. It was a fun setting with the people hanging out of windows, climbing on walls and pretty clouds/airplanes in the sky. Should of brought beer though...woops! |
