Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is the greatest bm album for me, Varg is genius when it comes to making such epic music, if you don't have at least one album of his you should not even bother with bm Immortal- they're like fine wine, with each album i felt abbath got more and more creative, almost a god like staitis, such a shame they're not around anymore, i breath abbath and can't wait for his solo project, "Pure Holocaust," "Damned in Black" "Sons of Northern Darkness" all great albums, the only band i listened too for months DarkThrone- what can be said about them that hasn't already been said? the Truest band still to this day, the first 4 albums dominate, but their new stuff is just as good, "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" one of my top 5 bm albums Mayhem- ya ya ya Maniac sucks, well fuck you! i dare you to look me straight in the eye and tell me Chimera sucked. you can't. the guys that did fucking DEATHCRUSH!!!! new and old Mayhem had that staying power and was never afraid to try something different, RIP Euronymous, Dead Enslaved- some of the most epic black metal in the world! i'll even dare to compare them to being a bm Opeth, Below the Lights is much a brilliant album, whenever i hear them i'm in awe with the complex yet simple nature of the music, i feel like just walking for hours in the woods Satyricon- DISGUSTING, two words: MOTHER NORTH Frost maybe just one of the best drummers in the world, Volcano is such a mindblowing album that i discover that the more you listen too the more you enjoy and truly respect it |

| _______________________________________ [Oct 5,2004 1:18am - xtomx at work ""] i think all of the old black metal bands were genious...mayhem, burzum, darkthrone, emperor being the standouts. unforetunately, i think black metal is eating itself alive...the bm camp is splitting into factions nowadays; those who want to deviate from and build upon what the originators lay down, and those who want to emulate the originators to keep the sound true to its roots. sadly, most bands cant pull off what theyre trying to do...thats why you have idiots in neon uv corpsepaint (and totally forgetting where it all came from) and people that are so cliched you can barely even look at them without laughing. there are some standouts though in the modern wave of bm...leviathan, xasthur, crebain and (newer) fog come to mind. |

Hate Them was one of my favorite albums of last year. Setherial - blazing terror that has a heart of fire. Absu - technicality executed with upmost precision, power and grace that summons the discipline of wisdom. Summoning - perhaps the most unorthodox black metal band out there. epic majestic masterpieces that climb and descend like a adventure found in novel, all carried through without nearly a single blastbeat. my intellectual reading pick. |
