I told her all about the hoss and how fucking amazing that place was. god I miss it. I hope she uses some of what I said in the article too, that would be rad. I also hope she doesn't get my band name wrong.. but I guess I couldn't hold it against her.. anyway, this put a HUGE grin on my face. thanks so much carina for coming to my shows and working your magic. same to you rev. and anyone that supports diy for that matter. fuck clubs, up the basements. speaking of which, Oct 12! First show at "The Library"! Don't miss it.. |
_________________________________________________ [Sep 28,2004 2:20am - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""] my thoughts on an article on basement shows in Beantown: if that article doesn't mention Crusty Craig or Ross Noyes, it's highly inaccurate. There wouldn't be basement shows today (EDIT: in Boston) if it wasn't for those two guys doing what they did in the 90's, and no one ever turns the credit over to them. It's a shame, in my opinion. On one hand, it's a travesty cause people go against Craig who basically invented 60% of the spots, bands, and show styles that all the basement kids emulate now. He helped Ross along he way...shit they even played in bands together. On the other hand, Ross is still doing stuff and hopefully has a chance for people to start recognizing his work in the next few years. What Ross did with Re:Generation in Dorchester was UNHEARD of in this state: it was so ballsy, he put so much on the line, and if that goes unnoticed then I am really have lost total respect for modern so-called "DIY"-band culture in this area. The problem is, without going into detail and bogging down the original nature of the thread, that the "DIY" culture in Boston has shifted...it's far less about it's original values and far more about posturing. No one in that scene would ever give up all of their "scene points" to let Al Quint, Craig, Ross, etc have the respect they deserve. Yet where would they be without them? Still in the suburbs, or playing Top 40. The only person that 100% earned the name dropping he will certainly receive in that article is Ben Sisto. That kid ran, organized, or over-saw all the MassArt shows in its hey-day. He also worked with the X-Haus, if I remember correctly, which for its time and place was more vital than the HOSS was of late, and did more on a larger scale. Ben is still working really hard, though I don't see his direction as clearly, but I am certain he will be recognized in the books of Boston rock history for what he did and does, for better or worse. The X-Haus should also be mentioned in the article, too, if you're ever going to mention the HOSS. Or at the LEAST the House Of Suffering...which was the HOSS before those kids moved in. It's weird to see how much goes into a culture, and then see it come into an article as "THE HOSS WAS BOSTON'S FIRST AND MOST CHERISHED DIY SPOT" or something like I feel it's going to be... God that's apocraphyl. I hope the reporters dig deep enough and do the right thing, but maybe I'm just a wishful thinker. Maybe the article will just be whatever's on the surface, or maybe it'll just be about the concept of basement shows (which they still should have consulted Craig or Ross) or something like that. **but back on topic: Carina, great pictures, you have a nack. I am really glad all these opportunities are opening up for you and I hope many more come to follow. You should toss Aaron a bone or two hahahahah j/k |

_________________________________________________ [Sep 28,2004 3:10am - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""] it's well founded preamble, I might add. For instance, if the article doesn't mention this (posted below), what's the point? There's more history to boston than a few scant HOSS shows and a couple other things here and there in under a year. this is what should be mentioned, but probably won't be: "Hello Everyone! As many of you know, two years ago, the original Regeneration closed down due to the city of Boston's inspectional services regulations. There was no way we were going to be able to afford to change the occupancy of the ReGen warehouse space to fit the legal parameters of Boston's strict live music/nightclub codes. Nor was the landlord willing to help us out with any of it. We were financially defeated and angry about the closing, but determined to reopen at some point. We looked at a few spaces, but without funding, we couldn't reasonably start over. Then, a few months ago, my boss at Flyrabbit (small gift/bookstore where I work) decided to close the store after 10 years. She asked me if I wanted to take the place, take over the lease, etc. I have been working there for almost five years and am on good terms with the landlord and the neighbors. What my partner,Ross, and I realized with ReGen I, was that a DIY space in Boston CAN work. People were respectful and helpful, shows were well attended, everyone was really supportive. We decided to try to make this space work since the city of Allston seemed open to the idea of a live music venue/tattoo shop. Things are moving along, we have applied for the proper permits and have hired lawyers to help us through the whole zoning maze. We are going to doing alot of construction and painting to the place, which is where we could use lots of volunteers. Also, the record store part of it is mainly going to stock punk/hardcore stuff; mostly new and plenty of local stuff. We could use any donations from labels or collections that anyone might be selling. Both Ross and I think this could work, with the tattoo shop in the back and the record store in front. There will be a small stage, salvaged from the original ReGen, and a decent sound system. We expect the place to hold no more than 100 people. This is a neighborhood that is built around bars and live music, with lots of restaurants open late and tons of college students, not to mention located very close to public transportaion. We are going to call the new place Regeneration Records, and I hope it will be around for a long time. Our eventual plan, if all goes well, is to open just a D.I.Y. all-ages club at some point, hopefully using money we raise doing this project. Also, we realized that as small business owners, the city is more apt to do business with us and take us seriously. So, that's where things stand right now. The website; www.regenerationboston.com, will be back up soon. If you would like to volunteer, donate, or you have ideas, comments or questions, feel free to email either me or Ross. Thanks for reading this, Sue and Ross " I think it's important for people to have an idea of one history of basement shows versus another to compare to one that will be written by journalists in a periodical. |

__________________________________________________ [Sep 28,2004 11:48am - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""] bah, I was saying that traditionally the media has taken one approach to portraying history versus what is considered colloqiual history. With something like basement shows, where no one is writing down what happens every time, facts get lost along the lines. With something like this, where the only way the reporters are going to know the truth is if people speak up, that takes a great vouch of faith that a) anyone that they interview will know the history or remember it, or b) that people are selfless enough to give credit to someone else when their 15 minutes rolls around. I'm just saying I doubt that will happen, and yet everyone that reads the article will go "Oh! So Basement shows started with the HOSS, I get it". That's sad because people like Craig spent over 10 years building up that scene using money they never got back, time they will never get back, and resources that can't be replenished. A good example of what I meant would be if someone said the Phoenix was running an article on Metal and said, "Metal? What is it? Well, it has it's roots with undisputadly the kings of metal, Metallica. Before them, there was no metal, and all the bands today that ARE metal come from them. The word Metal comes from the name "Metallica"". And everyone that hasn't heard much metal goes OHHHHH ok I get it, that makes sense. But you negate the history of a culture when that happens. But I have no way of knowing how the article is till it's published. It could just be about the current status of basement shows, how some bands mostly play those, in which case it need not be an issue of the history of them. If that's the case then my worry is unnecessary. I'm just worried when reporters say they are going to give the populace the "real" story behind something, but then you open it and it's like that Metallica analogy. In this particular case I saw how hard those people worked, and now there's a chance they might get overlooked for nearly a decade of selfless work, you know? If it was a local zine writing the story I wouldn't be so like Hmmmm but it's a paper that gets quite a bit of distribution, so the facts need to be as tight as possible, and the Phoenix doesn't always do that. So really it's just preamble, not shit talking. Jonah just says it is cause he likes conflict. |

__________________________________________________ [Sep 28,2004 12:07pm - the_taste_of_cigarettes ""] oh forget it. you know, if this was "Your Thoughts On The Upcoming Converge CD" no one would be so raggy taggy. Yeesh. since when is it wrong to say how you think something is going to come out? It's predictive, that's all. other people could say "I bet the article will be kick ass" whether the article is good or not, the pictures are still good, and they're great press for Carina, so I suppose that's the best thing to stick to as far as topic in the thread. I'm sure that is agreed upon. |

Again, thanks for coming to my shows in the first place, never mind taking rad pictures that end up imortalizing my band in print. Although there's a couple tid bits that worry me about the piece(including one quote about the hoss being set on fire), I like it. Of course it could have been more in depth, or maybe less on the shock value tip (talking about crusty tims wild piercing and tats), but I feel like the writer cares about this stuff. I'm gonna cross my fingers that police commissioner whateverhisface doesn't read it, but even if he does hopefully some kids will also read it and get motivated to go to a show next weekend, or clean out there own basement.
