___________________________________ [Jun 29,2008 5:16pm - ........ Yamasenkos rule -- I use texas rig & whacky rig. That's a big 'ol hawg you have up top there. I went yesterday, got a couple but nothing that huge. I may head out big lake trolling later this week. The themocline should be setting up nice now -- set the riggers at 25 to 35 feet and you kill the salmon. |

Keeps me in shape and I get to eat good after a hunt... I have 2 British Yellow labs -- I waterfowl hunt and upland hunt with them. Currently have been training everyday -- they have a Working Certificate Intermediate test coming up later this month. |
___________________________________ [Jul 1,2008 4:53pm - UplandMan ""] My father use to own British labs (always black) and he did lots of waterfowl and upland but he's too old today and dogless. I technically could hunt my Drahthaar for waterfowl but its not my thing i guess. unfourtantely my drahthaar has tracked and killed 2 cats in fields and brought them back to me. Points rabbits all the time (annoying) and almost killed a huge racoon in my yard. This breed is a little hard to handle. I trained with him so much it was frustrating and maddening at times but now that he is trained and older its a joy. Enjoy your british labs! I always remembered how freakin awesome they were. Very smart dogs and they get along with everyone. sorry to change the subject... |
_________________________________________ [Jul 1,2008 4:59pm - largefreakatzero ""] Discussions of fishing should almost always lead to / involve a discussion of hunting. That's tough about the dog killing shit -- is he ever hard-mouthed with birds? Right now I am working on baseball drill to teach casting and lining drills. Their hunt test coming up won't involve any blind retrieves, so I don't need to worry about that, but that baseball drill sucks for everyone involved -- the dogs often just don't want to pay attention. I am finally getting somewhere with it after 2 to 3 weeks of beating my head against a wall -- I have made it a point to keep them separated and in their kennels more often, so the most fun they will have is training. Seems to be working. Good luck with your pointer! |

Seems to be working. Good luck with your pointer! I have a friend who has a hunting lab and I believe he followed Mike Lardy and Rick Stawski's programs to train. Do you utilize an e-collar? I use a Tri-Tronics Pro 500 G2. I bought this back in 2005 when they first came out...incredible tool that keeps on working and I don't wanna hear people say "shocking a dog is cruel, blah blah blah" if you understand the tool and how it is used its the most humane, effective, tool you could ever use. Anyway my dog was force broke so he is not hard mouth and understands that fetching is a command not a choice. Force training is a very grueling task and people who do not understand this type of training will say its abuse. But... by instinct the Drahthaar is able to track game and dispatch it (kill it) and bring it back to the hunter. Its a versatile breed but its not for everyone. A lot of people call them the "ugly dog" My dad always told me that dog training is an art and science. Any time you start to lose your cool STOP and put the dog away and re-think and analyse what is going on specifically. And cool off and start again. Repitition and consistency is key. I belong to a club so I had a ton of help from others in training. Maybe you could join a club??? I never got into the dog games, it takes a lot of time for that stuff. So good luck in your testing! again sorry to do a 360! :duffbeer: |
