Picks!!!

I need a badass pick. I always find myself losing grip on my pick. I know it's not because I don't grip it hard enough because I have a pretty tight hold on it. I've tried to make grooves in the picks I had to get some friction in there but god damn it.
What are a good brand of picks/what picks do you use?

Green or purple Dunlop jazz Tortex stubbies. Sharp.

I just ordered 20 dollars worth of different types of picks from MF. I find that I have a preference for picks around the 1.00mm thickness. I can't go any lower unless I'm strumming chords on my acoustic. I can't go much higher or else I feel like I'm holding one of Rosie O'Donnell's vagina lips between my fingers.
I got a few with grips and the crazy Everly star ones. I just want to try stuff out. I don't like the feel of the Tortex picks anymore. I got a Gator Grip and got spoiled. They feel really nice in between my fingers but they still lack the grip I want. Hopefully I luck out with this next batch of picks I ordered.

I ordered a dozen Ultex Jazz ones so we'll see how those fair. I've played with a jazz a few times and it's weird getting used to the smaller area. I ordered this crazy Dava one that has adjustable guage? I guess it soft in the middle so you can squeeze it however you want. Something like that.

[May 22,2008 10:59pm - blue ""]
youre probably not going to dig the dava. the concept is cool, but its a pain in the ass. id rather have a stiff pick and adjust my picking attack instead of having to worry about moving around my pick in my fingers.

ive been very intersted in trying the ultex jazz. i have a feeling the tortexs grip better though. but the ultexs probably last a lifetime.

the tortex H3 jazzs are dece.

The everyly star jazz picks are awsome. Basically a dunlop tortex with a star cut out for grip.

I ordered a dozen of those. I can't wait to get like 5 dozen picks in the mail next week and never need picks for like a year.

i ordered a pack of jazz3s from musician.com and they accidentally sent me an entire case, I like haven't had to buy picks in over a year.

yeah man..they are the only choice at this point. jazz 3's were just a hair to thick in the end. i have used them 'cool' picks as a few times and found them to be damn impressive as well. close rival imo.

I think the thinner the pick the better to grind it out
 __________________________________
[May 23,2008 12:16am - Martins ""]
I do agree that thin picks help to play really fast but I can't stand how soft they are, how thin they feel, how quickly they destroy, and how they bend so easily and stay that way after playing for five minutes. I've gotten rid of many a pick because they were bent.

ive been obsessing about finding the perfect pick lately, so far Im digging the .88 tortex but I want to check out the clayton spike, or go for broke and get a Red Bear Traders faux tortoise but I havent been able to find any at the local music shops.

any kind of heavy pick, doesn't matter what brand. they all sound the same to me, but then again i beat the shit out of those strings. i can do mediums too, but prefer better resistence if i'm playing fast or palm muting a lot

i currently use these. used to use the gator grip purple ones. around the .7 range. i still have a hard time holding on to my pick. tends to slip through my fingers and i end up playing with the ends of my fingers til i get a spot in the song i can get a better grip. kinda sucks. ive never found a good solution for it.

I use the Dava's, I have been using them for about 3 years. I like em, they don't slip out of my hand. Before these I used Brain picks (Charlie Stringers) until Dunlop bought them out and they have been impossible to find. They had a grip on it that felt almost like a cat's tongue, they NEVER came out of my fingers.
If nothing else works for ya try using Monkey Snot!

I use these in a .60

I hold my pick weird -- I actually hold it sideways and only a fraction of the pick actually picks. Mad speed yo.

I have a few 2mm Gators and it just feels to bulky in my hand.
I wouldn't be able to play on a .73mm pick ever. It'd be broken in a second.

I use .010 to .52's. I wanna upgrade to .011 to .52's very soon tho. It has a lot to do with my attack. I pick with the pick angle towards the fretboard and I pick pretty hard. All the soft picks I own are bent inwards.

I find it easier to trem pick and/or shred with thinner picks... but it depends on what tuning your guitar is (how 'loose' the strings are) and what size strings you use.
Also depends on what music you're playing.

actually now that i think about it the best picks that i've ever used were some generic kind from the worcester music awards a couple years back that the womag had printed up, i ended up with a stockpile of like 75 of those fuckin things and they play amazing. no idea where they were made, though

this may be true, but you lose crucial pick attack strength/tone when using an overly thin pick.

i liked jazz 3s a lot, but theyre so thick they can be awkward to hold a teensy bit. the h3s still have the absolute stiffness, but with a less cumbersome feel. and if anything i find that the tortex grip way better.

using a quarter on an acoustic makes for a very bright sound.

yea, it definitely does. if you don't care too much about your strings, using a quarter isn't that bad.

Okay so I now believe in all the hype about the Jazz III's. I'm using the Ultex ones and these are amazing. I don't know if they have the grip I wanted but I play so much better with these. I like the Dava multi-guage ones. And the Dava rubber grip ones except that they're too soft. I got the Everly star ones and they're pretty sweet but I don't think I"ll use them for metal. I also bought a cork grip one and those work great too but shit the Jazz III's make me play.
