So I got a 19 inch monitor not to long ago and it's really good for some stuff like gaming, movies, and reading RTTP, BUT with about 95% of my time on the computer, I'm looking at guitars.

The 19" monitor makes the pictures wide and short, which makes guitars look unatractive.

Is your monitor 16:10 or 4:3?

What resolution are you using?

Nothing should be out of proportion like you're describing.

I have it set at 1152x864, but it gets worse as i raise the resolution. it has a 1440 x 900 maximum resolution. 500:1 contrast ratio

MSD is spot on. you are using the wrong resolution. I can't use anything below 21" cause I need 1200 hieght for coding. are work, I have dual 21"s and at home I have my laptop hooked up to a 24" LCD (1900x1200) which was only $600-ish

yeah for the longest time i had my monitor set at 1024x768 and i thought it looked pretty bad. Then one day i just set it at 1280x1024 which is its native resolution. Monitors look so much better at their native resolution.

here's a secret, when you log into RTTP, it tells me what resolution you guys use. a lot of you use shitty resolutions... I don't know how you guys deal with it. I know that I couldnt.

1440x900 is what the monitor can do or your video card can do.
you want to figure out it's native resolution.
my 19"'s native resolution is 1280x1024

Is your monitor widescreen? (16:10) or regular? (4:3)?

widescreen

Yeah, sounds like you're using a 4:3 resolution on a 16:10 monitor. Check your monitor's documentation and see what the native resolution they recommend using is. The monitor will always look it's best in the native resolution.

It sais the native resolution is 1440 x 900 but when I so to my display settings, that resolution isn't an option. Is that because of my graphics card?
 ___________________________________________________
[Jan 7,2007 3:42pm - menstrual_sweatpants_disco ""]
Yeah, it sounds like your graphics card doesn't support that resolution. What kind of card is it?

on my computer upstairs someone keeps changing to resolution to 800x600 because they 'cannot see'
and then complain when they upload an image from a digital camera because it is too big.

you just need to search for the driver. your computers probably from pre-wide screens

when you go to properties and change your screen res. it should tell you what graphic card you are running.

eh, it's possibl but highly unlikely. especially if you haven't tried fining the driver. if you are an ass and can't find it, just use the program power strip and make you own.

The graphic card is an intel 82810 and I've downloaded and installed the driver on their website. Still, 1440 x 900 is not coming up as an option.

try rebooting. if you haven't already.
if that doesn't work get a nice videocard.

[Jan 7,2007 8:49pm - the_reverend ""]
OK YOU FUCKING MORON. IT'S NOT THE VIDEO CARD DRIVER. It's the driver for the monitor. your machine needs to know that it's a widescreen otherwise you are going to get clipping and aliasing from the monitor trying to deal with a non-supported resolution. find the driver for the monitor or make your own with power strip.

[Jan 7,2007 8:58pm - Niccolai ""]
Westinghouse sais that the monitor is plug and play and no drivers are needed. The manual that came with the monitor sais for driver support to go to the intel site, so I don't know what else you're telling me that I'm not getting Aaron.

[Jan 7,2007 9:15pm - the_reverend ""]
it's not plug and play for your computer obviously. update the driver for the default monitor, have disk, and then look to find your monitor from the list.
the 2407wfp that I got needed a driver.

oh there's also this program that I don't think I've mentioned yet. it's called power strip.

It could be. Some video cards just simply don't handle widescreen resolutions.
