KEVORD said:Mayhem in their current incarnation is Necrobutcher and Hellhammer touring on the legend of their dead friends. They haven't even released a studio album in six years or a good album in nineteen. So give me a fucking break about how relevant they are to black metal music in 2013.

9 out of 10 black metal bands today are worship bands of 4 or 5 Scandinavian acts from the early 90's. If those bands are relevant (which they by definition are) how the fuck is Mayhem not, who not only contributed to a template that is followed by almost all black metal bands today, but whose last album was somehow actually good??

Their last album sucked. 10 out of 10 black metal bands today worship Bathory not fagget Mayhem.

Celtic Frost and Bathory created the template not early 90's bands.

"contributed to a template" is what I said. Not created. So far you've misapplied everything I've said and made a straw man argument against it. Nice

Also, of course CF, Bathory are worshipped today. Burzum and Mayhem just as much imo

Nobody would care about Mayhem if not for the Norwegian church burning crap. They had one really good album in 1994 and have since toured on the hype of their Lords of Chaos fame.

Tl;dr version of this thread - Viall is still fagget and "what" purchased Lords of Chaos in his Hot Topic which is how they became lifelong handholding friends.

As someone who was alive in the early 90's I can say we where all importing albums from Emperor, Enslaved, Darkthrone, Burzum........and no one ever mentioned ordering Death Crush.

Jesus Christ. Ok after this one I'm out. Keep deflecting though, by all means. Its the template they helped create that influences the current crop. Regardless of if people hold them in good standing nowadays. Whether conscious or not a lot of shit is derivative of Mayhem, among others. Also thinking current black metal is only influenced by 80's bands? You give them (current bands) wayyy too much credit. That's what derivative implies, a copy of a copy, where you no longer see the origin of your influences. You think Deafheaven loves CF? No, they love the blog that they downloaded Belus off of when it came out and discovered Burzum and then started a band. You think the shit ton of current black death bands aren't just copying the already derivative (of Blasphemy) shit that they buy from NWN?

When you say Mayhem is no longer relevant, what you are doing is parroting the same garbage that clueless hip music "journalists" and frustrated grandiose blog/forum dwellers are selling.

No he's not. He's saying they're no longer relevant in the sense they were a fleeting part of a picture in time that was second wave BM. I get what you mean -- that using the word "relevant" implies "you need to be new and hip and get with the times and read Brooklynvegan" but he's really just saying Mayhem's past significance is inflated in mythology. No need to stir up your baggage about the subject.

I'm willing to concede that point. What it looked like to me was discounting Mayhem's last record just on account of their being irrelevant now. Which would be lame, but I can see the other valid way of looking at it. Agreed Deathcrush isn't good and most of their output after De Mysteriis, the Maniac stuff is not great either. I think Ordo Ad Chao is different and redeemed them. Fuck it.
