What in God's name is an "Indian Rattle"? That sounds almost as gay as calling a bike seat a "saddle".

This thread is lulzy. I can't believe anyone (who is technically adult) still exchanges gifts for this silly holiday.

If I need something and it's within my means, I will buy it myself. My wife and I have a mutual agreement that we don't waste money on stupid gifts for a stupid holiday we don't believe in -- we spend money on paying down our mortgage or other necessary home improvements. I have the same agreement with extended family that we do NOT exchange gifts.

You can keep grasping on to this silly tradition all you want, I just don't get it.

I agree with lfaz, but when someone gave me a 'cats in hats' calendar, I felt the holiday spirit!

See who you want to, eat too much, drink too much, etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just don't understand the gift giving.

Do you give gifts to people on their birthdays? Do you get gifts on your birthday? I'd say that practice is just as arbitrary and "foolish" as giving gifts on Christmas.
 _____________________________________
[Dec 27,2011 11:57am - Alx_Casket ""]
It stems from the tradition of charity from an unknown source. Saint Nick used to break into the houses of poor people and leave bags of coins, as the fable describes. That eventually turned into a fat elf in a red suit going down a chimney and dropping off presents for muggles.

Had a bunch of deaths in the family this year, if shelling out a few bucks to give my surviving relatives beer and see them smile for once is wrong then I don't wanna be right

It's because EVERYONE ELSE GIVES GIFTS so if you don't, you're a bad sibling/bf/person/whatever. It's like, you could give your gf flowers EVERY day of the year except valentines day, and if you miss that ONE day, you're a shitty boyfriend.

I know what you mean, but you have establish agreements with friends/gf/wife/family to stop. Tell them that you'll look forward to seeing them for the holidays, but you didn't buy any presents and don't want any presents.

That's what I did, and instead of xmas, I got drunk alone and played skyrim. Great success!

Good man. I did have to attend a family function a week ago, and supplied dessert and a couple bottles of wine, per request (everyone pitched in something). Xmas day was spent with the wife at home --drinking, puttering, loafing, napping, then we made prime rib with Yorkshire pudding.

yeah.. you obviously don't get the concept of owning one of those things if you actually still think you are going to be using it after a few week.s

Does it make a difference that I always wear assless chaps when riding my bike?

And the "indian rattle" is a rattle, made by a Navajo american indian. It's got leather and beads and feathers and shit. I'm ready for the pow-wow.

I'd been trying to convince my family for years not to get me anything and they kept refusing to do so, so I just decided to get a few boxes and fill them full of stupid cheap tacky bullshit from Building 19. My family kept trying to tell me it was thoughtful and not stupid and blah blah... I put no thought into any of this whatsoever and the whole point of this gift giving was to be fucking stupid. Kinda made me feel bad for them.

I have an idea for next year already that's going to be way stupider.
