Best NES games ever??

All this Nintendo negativity has got me down, so I demand your picks for best NES games. (This could go on for a few.)

Dragon Warrior: Simple as fuck; I could still play this for hours. Getting past that damn gold golem was amazing. The music was super influential to me as a composer; as an added bonus, my sister (a trained jazz musician) insisted that there was this ONE NOTE in the bassline that was "off," and it made her completely crazy, which entertained me almost as much as the game itself. Edit: It was a regular Golem. My b.

Double Dragon II: Crazy control scheme that totally worked. You could finally play two-player co-op. And that crazy noise it made when you HYPER UPPERCUTTED the FUCK out of some mook and made him fly across the screen and bounce off the wall. Good times.

Double Dragon III: Way too hard, and it took too long to get to Chin and Ranzou, but I forgive it these flaws. Plus, for some reason, Egypt!

StarTropics: Yes, it's Zelda with a yo-yo. No, I don't care; it's still awesome.

River City Ransom: I'll take it for granted that I don't have to explain this one. "Puke!"

Desert Commander: A WWII turn-based strategy game? For the NES? Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Well, me, but this was way too cerebral for the average 8-year-old - I can't imagine it was anything like a financial success. Great game regardless.

Astyanax: You hit stuff with a BIG AXE. Then, after you do that enough times, you get to do it WITH A BIGGER AXE. And there's a pixie or a fairy or something, I don't remember. I just remember it being fun as fuck.

FUCK YEAH. Duke Togo was the MAN. (Although the sequel sucked.)

Both those Disney games were actually really good.

I could play that Pool of Radiance port for hours, although there were some frustrating omissions. The PC version was way challenginger (yes, that's a word).

ATHENA.

Wacky beat-em-up platformer with equipment changes and mythology and a big fucking ball and chain. That intro music still makes me smile. Plus it's from SNK, which automatically = WIN.

For example,

P.O.W.: I'LL FUCKING STAB YOU. And shoot you with this machine gun, and - oh - it's out of bullets, but here come some guys with knives I can take, and IT'S STABBIN' TIME AGAIN. One of my all-time favorite beat-em-ups. (Although the arcade version was way rockinger.) (Also a word.)

Agreed 1 billon percent!!! The arcade was superior, but the NES version still destroyed.

Another higly underlooked game was fucking Punisher! Amazing gameplay, in the style of Operation Wolf but old-school comic style and way more graphic and violent. Had killer boss stages, challenging, great sound and graphics, and totally killed all other shoot em up games of the time and now.

I really want to play it again.

Backed. I spent hours trying to make sure I shot EVERY INCH of screen that could be shot. (Or are you talking about the arcade beat-em-up with Nick Fury? Which ruled as well?)

This game was so fucking good, thanks for reminding me of the name so I can finally download it (searching for "proto-Advance Wars" & "Hitler" wasn't very effective).

And I can't believe none of you mentioned R-Type or Lifeforce
