go with Motu 828mkii. $800 investment, but this is upgradable and you'll get what you pay for. You may even find one on ebay

NEVER EVER EVER EVER get a USB audio interface. They suck balls. Go Firewire.

which computer do you have though, you want to make sure you have compatability with these--

Presonus Firepod, a few hundred bucks cheaper, may also do the trick

but please please, just make sure you get a FIREWIRE INTERFACE

that would also do--what computer though? speed? storage? make/model?

you'll want to get an external Firewire hard-drive, as well.
But it looks like that MOTU has one built-in???

I've been considering getting a new Mac, but really even though my current 400 mhz G4 is clunky, I'm content with my analog 4-trk. for recording. Because once you start down this 'upgrading' route, you gotta always get new shit--monitors, interfaces, plug-ins, drivers, workstations--

fuck that noise, I ain't opening a studio just yet . . . just trying to bring the metal with me band!

the computer at my house is an IBM 2.6 or 2.8 ghz i believe....two 40G hard drives, 1G RAM but its my dad's so i couldn't take it anywhere....i want a G5 but like you said here comes the downward spiral of getting one thing then needing 3 more

that computer should be able to handle whatever

you should consider this one, because you can record off-site, and mix at home:
