People always make comparisons but I see them as having very distinct styles: Exhorder is an amazing old school thrash band. Pantera's 'Cowboys' CD was in a kind of classic power/thrash vein, but everything after that was uniquely PANTERA. It's a sound that's hard to categorize except by saying "it sounds like Pantera." Dimebag is (was) a much, much better guitarist than either of the guys from Exhorder, although I think the Exhorder guys wrote cooler thrash riffs for the most part. Phil is an excellent and very unique vocalist who is imitated by many. But in terms of straight-up THRASH vocals, Kyle Thomas of Exhorder has Phil Anselmo beat easily. |

Dime was one of the most original, influencial and dominating guitar players of our time. He was our Randy Rhoads or EVH. He did things with a guitar that no one else could've dreamed. Vinnie Pauls and Rex Brown were one of the most solid Rhythm sections ever while still managing to not be just the back up behind the leads. And say what you will about Phil but his voice is more imitated than anyone else I can think of, and now one else can do his style right. If you dont like them, cool, but you've got to give credit were its do. While most of there peers where getting soft in the 90's they were getting harder, darker and heavier and they thrived doing it. |
