the_taste_of_cigarettes said:
I don't get what people do with all that equipment. like why are there two heads in some pics? do they just route signal to all the different amps and then to a cab or two a piece? I grew up doing the head + cab = your sound thing. I never got into rack shit nor do I even really understand it, so a lot of this is bizarre to me. I've rarely ever gone to shows in stadiums (been to the centrum like 2x) so I don't even know what to think when it comes to playing those places. basically I've always worked to have a good, analog head with a responsive, well-rounded set of speakers. Nothing more, nothing less. anyone care to do amplifier 101 for me?
two heads? sometimes backup in case one fails, but also you can run two at the same time in more than one cab obviously. Or have each with different settings and you can A/B between the two. As far as all the additional rack gear, to be honest, I don't even know. You'd have to be a super pro guitar tech to figure out what's going on just from looking at the pictures. You'd really have to have someone show you what's going on. I'm sure you need some monstrous sound to play arena's and for it to not sound whimpy. Sometimes they have like huge wall's of stacks in arena's so they'd need many heads to power it all. Some people just prefer rack gear, you can customize your sound quite a bit more and make it sound good if you really know what you're doing. I don't know what I'm doing haha, I prefer the sound/tone's of head's. I don't think many rack's by themselves can hold up against most 'boutique' heads. That's why you see some Bogner's in with the rack stuff. There's tons of technical shit to sound that's why there are professional guitar/amp tech's that just do that shit as a job and probably know way more than the musician using all the gear. Those little mini-combo's? I'm not sure exactly, but possibly for the guitar tech to quickly test guitars or for billy to warmup...
