linux dork thread[views:4777][posts:16]_______________________________________ [Oct 28,2005 12:08pm - the_reverend ""] go to fresh meat and install apt-get. it's the best thing you will install on that box. auto install A/P/M in like minutes with all the dependencies. my knoppix OS install is kernel 2.6.11 RTTP runs on RHEIII with some FC2 stuff installed. |

__________________________________________ [Oct 28,2005 12:54pm - DreamingInExile ""] once my build is done I'll go install apt-get. this is basically a beta web-dev box, so it's gonna be stripped down to almost nothing. we're testing a new online classroom platform, and I'm busy writing PERL scripts and shell scripts to quickly import the XML and install a new class. |
_________________________________ [Oct 28,2005 2:12pm - Xammael ""] As far as I know, Synaptic and apt-get pretty much do the same thing, with Synaptic being a GUI version of apt-get. I use ubuntu breezy (final version was released like a week ago) linux, and it comes with synaptic and apt-get, making updates and installing new progs so easy. With synaptic it takes about 30 seconds to turn your box into a webserver with apache, php and mysql. ubuntu is my first attempt at using linux, and i'm suprised apt-get/synaptic don't come with other versions of linux. |

______________________________________ [Oct 28,2005 3:38pm - the_reverend ""] there's a version for osx too.. I just never used it. only thing for osx I use is macpdate. |
____________________________________ [Oct 29,2005 6:42pm - anonymous ""] I used to use yum with fedora and other distros, but lately its been ubuntu breezy with apt-get. Still havn't got around to trying gentoo/emerge yet. |
______________________________________ [Oct 29,2005 7:37pm - the_reverend ""] I tried yum on fc2 and it didn't work. at work I use debian based knoppix so apt-get is were its at. though... I broke apt on RTTP... oopies. |

In fact, I don't know many dumb metalheads... the dumb ones are the angsty pre-pube teens that listen to nu-metal and think their lives are awful |
