For anyone who uses a fuzz pedal: What kind do you use and what kind of amp are you using in your setup?

Are there any tube amps that come with a decent stock fuzz sound? You see, I've only owned solid state amps in my years of playing (I know, I know, I suck) but this time around, I want to go about it a different way. I have about 5-600 dollars for a decent amp setup and I want to find something that EXTREMELY dirty and fuzzed to high hell. I need at least 50 watts and I won't buy a Marshall, sorry. Please help. :stupidflanders:

i use a Maxon 880 tube overdrive into a Sunn Beta Lead. i don't really need an overdrive pedal but i use it more as a channel switcher so can have a crunch sound from my head and then the pedal gives me a nice clean boost.
as far as an amp, it really depends on what style you're playing. different amps are good at different things. keep in mind, tube amps sound their best LOUD-- when the tubes are being driven hard-- so it's hard to test out a tube amp in a guitar center or what have you.
if you're not going to be in a super loud band (indie rock or something) you probably don't need more than 50 watts. if you're going to be in a balls to the wall high-gain thing, you'll probably want 100 or more. also, tube watts are "louder" than solid state. i find that a 100 watt tube amp and a 300 watt solid state seem to be about the same.

Yeah, I know about the loud factor, I'm just looking for something that fits well in the doom field. I was thinking of trying out a Mesa Boogie F50 or a 80's Carvin half stack. Still, I wouldnt mind owning an original peavey 5150 head or crate voodoo. Awwww soooooooo many options...

i wouldn't recommend a 5150 for doom...way too bright. i'm not familiar with the others. Mesa Mark IV's are awesome, but in your price range you might want to look at a Peavey XXX. also, Sunns as well as a bunch of other cool shit can be had cheaply (and frequently) on ebay.
Alternatively, just find the cheapest decent tube head you can find and replace all the power tubes and the 1st preamp tube with JJ's (nice thick, dark sound).

sunns are ideal for doom. a 5150s gain structure is waaaaaay too symmetrical clipping for it to work. modern mesas work well, some marshalls (tsl 100) as well. as far as a fuzz pedal, a big muff usa would be nice, if you really want to get off the wall with your fuzz (which im sure you do), look into a z vex fuzz factory. they can be pricey (250ish), but they just started their first production run ff, so those should be a little cheaper.

Give some examples of actual recorded tones. Words like Fuzz, warm, clean, etc.. are just too vague and can mean too many things to too many people. Also, ignore most of the posts here so far. Playing style, guitar choice, etc... can make a world of difference on the same amp head. What may be an Uber-dirty gritty distortion for you might turn into a sharp, crystal clean when I plug in my own guitar.

As for my assumption of what you mean by "fuzz", the big muff is a great pedal for this kind of sound. Your notes will get very soft & squishy, and lose a lot of distinction, thus creating a bit of a "fuzz" sound. Originally, the sound of "fuzz" was used to describe the distortion Pete Townsend got from playing through a marshall 4 X 12 that contained one speaker that was completely ripped.

A lot of the bands I've heard described as "doom" don't really have fuzzy guitars. The bass is often distorted, and sounds fuzzy. The guitars have more of a solid state overdrive sound, oversaturated and throaty, like when a wah wah pedal is left halfway open.

Alright! Now we got a thread going! Basically, I want my "fuzz" to sound closer to TV snow than, lets say, the latest Electric Wizard tones.

I remember seeing a pedal a few years back that was currently being promoted by the guitarist(s) of P-Funk. It was the nastiest, dirtiest, static-like tone I've ever heard. Maybe I'll buy that (once I find it).

So I found a Sundown A50 head (1980's 50 watt tube amp) and RMS cab today at a local shop. That halfstack fucking cranks. The distortion is warm and somewhat fuzzy, but I know I will end up buying a pedal no matter what amp I finally buy. He was asking $595 for everything and I told him I'd have to think about it. Anyone ever hear of Sundown amps?

The problem is- a constant hum/whine while playing that i couldnt correct or find the source for. Maybe thats why the half stack is going for half the normal asking price...hm......

It shouldn't be too big of an issue, something easily repairable most likely. If all else fails, slap a noise gate in front of it.

80-lukulainen 50 W kaksikanavainen täysputkinuppi, kanavilla erilliset sävynsäädöt, Gain- ja Mid-boost, takapaneelissa yhteíset reverb ja precense, putkina uudet JJ:n 2xEL34 ja 5x12AX7.

Erikoisuutena vahvistimessa molemmille kanaville omat efektilenkit sekä erikoiset Governor- ja RMS-säädöt, joiden ideana on toimia ikäänkuin portaattomana tehonpudottajana
->yliohjatun putkikoneen soundi jo pienillä tehotasoilla.

Kaiutinlähdöt 4 ja 8 Ohmia, Line Out.

Kaapissa alkuperäinen 200 wattinen Electro-Voice 12S.

Erittäin siisti ja ehjä kokonaisuus, kevyt roudata ja mielestäni tyylikkään näköinen
