To me the first ep and album by Sodom, and first three Bathory records were the first real black metal releases. Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost/HH may have an evil vibe, but I would hesitate to call it black metal. They are some of my all time favorite bands anyway. I don't really care about labelling them. Venom could be thrash, NWOBHM, or black metal. Mercyful Fate could be heavy metal, or black metal. Celtic Frost could be death metal, thrash, or black metal. When it comes to the older bands, it's subjective. Post-1990 bands usually have a sound that they go for, or fit into, but there are always exceptions. |

Although there was a time once where anything satanic was known as black metal like 1986 when Danzig was considered black metal. Venom named a CD black metal no one actully called any kind of music black metal again however untill Euronomus* (spelling) started calling the bands he promoted out of his record store black metal. Guinnes is gross and I only own 2 cradle of filth CDs and I like them way more than any celtic frost. And yes I hardly listen to black metal anymore because it all sounds like 3 different bands now. The only BM worth listning too these days is Obtained enslavement, Profanum, Mayhem or limbonic art. everything else is played out beyond all anything ever before.
