true, good thing i still have my game boy. speaking of puzzle games, i got the sonic collection for ps2, the game I've played the most is this Bean game which is basically the same format as Dr. Mario/Kirby's Avalanche.

StarCraft, WarCraft, the Ogre Battle Series are good, Fire Emblem for GBA, Shining Force. Nothing new, but great fucking games. Current consoles don't have much that I know of, but I'm a big fan of those game.

fire emblem for Gamecube looks pretty cool. I got Batallion Wars for christmas which is a little more action based, but still very much a good strategic war game.

TOTAL WAR. that is all - the be all end all, ultimate fucking awesome strategy games ever. you need a monster computer to run rome: total war (the newest one), but you can run medieval:tw really smoothly on a computer thats a few years old. there is also shogun:tw for any japanophiles.

look em up, theyre sick.

plus, medieval:tw is kind of old now, so you could probably get it for 20 bucks off of amazon.com...AND it has a sick VIKING expansion pack, where you can wage massive battles and raids against the celts and english. black metal as fuck.

There are so many great strategy games....all starting with Herzog Zwei on the Genesis.

It all went downhill from there, but there are still some great ones. Rise of Nations, StarCraft/WarCraft, Civilization, etc.

Oh yeah? are you sure? if you can look past the "cute" graphics, every game that NIS of USA makes is AMAZING.

Disgaea, LaPucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave (its a very innovative one), Atelier Iris, Makai Kingdom... and they keep making more. all of them are like Ogre Battle, but these games have AMAZING attacks, over the top action, cheeky humor, and its just flatout fun. awesome character creation and stuff too. you can also level OVER 99 too. and they are also implementing random map generation into all of the games too. endless challenge. great games. i would suggest picking them up.

http://www.nisamerica.com/ theres their site if you want to see them, but again.... dont judge it by the "cute" graphics. give them a shot, wont be disappointed.

Awesome, I'll check those out. Cute graphics don't bother me. As long as its a solid game, thats all I care about.

Starcraft and Warcraft are good
Age of Empires is good to, and I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it, personally I suggest AoE 2
Also I heard Empire Earth was good, but I have never actually played it, but it goes from ancient roman times to modern day

while we're on the subject, i know nothing about pc games...other than a fancy mouse/controller, is there anything else you need for them (processor, chip or whatever)?

Depends on the game.

the easiest one to find cheap is Phantom Brave... it has a very unique battle system. basically you have to "confine" souls to items that are lying around and when you do that, you pretty much summon a guy. he lasts a certain amount of turns depending on his stats and then goes away and cant be summoned again during that battle. you can also pick up anything and throw it... also picking stuff up allows you to use it as a weapon... different things have different skills. trees have arbor day which does some leaf attack or wahtever and so on and so forth. hell you can even pick up ither players and use them as blunt objects. there is also a ring out system too. you can knock people back or throw them out of bounds and that can kill them or put them back at the place they fell off. but yeah... i have to go back to work... hope you check out out one of those games soon.

The Nippon Ichi games are great, I've bought every one Stateside so far, b/c they merge the anime JRPG style with more strategy elements.

It depends if you want Real-Time Strategy or Turn-based Strategy..

Someone mentioned Shining Force for Sega Genesis.. one of my favorite series of games ever... but it combines RPG elements with turn-based strategy. Another game that would be similar to it is Ogre Battle or Tactics Orge for the SNES, as well as Playstation's Front Mission Series and Final Fantasy Tactics.

As far as RTS, computer games are the best..
Age of Empires I and II
Starcraft
Warcraft I, II, III
Empire Earth
Command And Conquer Series
as well as any other.. just go to IGN.com and browse through the RTS genre.

I personally like the computer turn-based games though..
Age of Wonders I, II, and Shadow Magic are probably one of the best (and challenging) comptuer game series of all time. It's also made in Europe and is perhaps one of the most black metal games ever.
Disciples is another game that is great.
Lords of the Realm Series... there's a lot..
