Restocked Truculent releases, some Hospital Productions stuff from last weekend at No Fun Fest in NY, restocked Work Death, and Corleone titles as well. New God Willing tape(ren Schofield) in an awesome package. From last week, the Gallhammer CD is notable, check out this review: [IMG]http://www.aquariusrecords.org/images/gallgloocd.jpg[/IMG] GALLHAMMER Gloomy Lights (Goatsucker / Diablos) cd Hmmm... This band should be an easy sell, really. Start with this: DOOM. A la Hellhammer (Tom G. Warrior's adolescent pre-Celtic Frost outfit that helped pioneer death/doom metal from a basement in Switzerland back in the early eighties), Eyehategod, and maybe Corrupted too. They're Japanese (so we can make more Corrupted comparisons). And this trio consists entirely of girls. One of our distros described Gallhammer thusly: "All female Japanese Hellhammer worship Band. Not ugly girls doing ugly, ugly music!". The high-contrast black and white photo on the back cover of band members Mika Penetrator (guitar/vocals), Vivian Slaughter (bass/vocals), and Risa Reaper (drums) reveals that "not ugly" comment apparently to be correct, with some vaguely corpse-paint-like mascara adding to their sex appeal. Not that that should be the selling point. After all, listening to this, you'd have *no idea* they were female. Throaty, demonic screams belch forth amidst pummelling drum battery and distorted, feedbacking guitar. Female? Male? They don't even sound human, really. Though the emotions expressed are all too human. Nihilistic bleak hateful depressive stuff. It's raw, primitive doom that captures that Hellhammer vibe by following a similar learning curve as those guys did back in the '80s -- Gallhammer's offical bio on their website states: "Feburary 2003: We start Gallhammer" followed by "Feburary 2003: Each member start to play instrument." And then Gloomy Lights was recorded in 2004. Yep, what Gallhammer does is simple and effective: heavy, plodding music and rough, croaking vocals, with plenty of ominous ambience in the breaks and build-ups. There's eight grim and spooky tracks here culminating in the 10-minute "Color Of Coma", which features a great deal of atmospheric drone. Think Hellhammer meets Angelblood, perhaps. Ok, check it out. Again using the Persian love poems of Rumi as well as the writings of Jean Feraca, Dominick also enlists the talents of Jeff Plummer ( IMMACULATE GROTESQUE ), Ben Barnett ( DROPDEAD ), Emily Salvatierra ( FOOTBALL RABBIT ), among others, to create this full length, live-recorded album that took over a year to assemble, record, and edit. This is a devastating, inhuman recording, unleashing incredibly painful feedback frequencies amongst the recordings of room ambience, of unidentifiable debris being destroyed, and battling the monstrous ,beyond-distorted vocals of Fernow as he recites lines like "whoever's not killed for love is dead meat...". There are some incredibly beautiful moments of glistening electronic ambience that shoot through the chaos, but they are always summarily destroyed by the fucking flesh-destroying feedback that eventually comes screaming out of the speaker. Fossil is a masterpiece of aural nihilism, the next step in self-immolating sonic horror beyond SWANS' "Time Is Money (Bastard)". Even at super low volume, Fossil is absolutely incendiary.
