Sure, not all were in popular songs, but by your own previous statement "The popular opinion of what is good" who cares? They existed in spades. Solos are NOT the only important aspect of guitar playing. Technicality, or as you put it, 'prowess' isn't always the most important thing for most music listeners. They want good riffs, and good songs. What do we want, a revival of showboating retards like Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai? Sure, they can shred, but can they write good songs? Fuck no. Now, I love guitar riffs and quality solos myself, don't get me wrong, but I have no respect for Avenged Sevenfold (or their clones, like the band pictured above), they are a $ellout band who have morphed their image and musical style to constantly parallel the latest hip thing. From straight up mosh-metalcore to suddenly realizing that is no longer cool, donning makeup and playing cheap Maiden/Motley Crue-style riffs. It only takes eyes to see, ears to hear.
