If you're really interested check out Kang Chol-Hwan's memoir Aquariums of Pyongyang He gives a basic rundown on Upper middle class North Korean life in the first few chapters then spends most of the book on the 8 years he spent in the Yodok 15 concentration camp.

I suppose you're right, though, the best way to avoid having a dictatorship is to unanimously support a strong unchallenged executive with militant views that conflict with the nation's interests. Only then can we avoid becoming like North Korea.
