Need some advice on Cable Modems

Instead of renting a Comcast Cable Modem for the Bukkake house we'd like to go out and buy our own.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm looking to set up a Wireless-G network at my house using our own shit basically.

How does that set up work for you?

We're getting the 8 Mbps set up as well. Trying to get our internet as fast as humanly possible.

um.. it works by packets being forwarded over NAT through the firewall/router into the cable modem?

I've been using this setting up for a while. some times the router locks up, but since 99, I've bought 3 cable modems and 5 routers. it seems like linksys usually has a upgraded firmware to fix the issues as I find them. why don't you get a draft-n? I would also suggest keeping a sever hooked to the router and not wireless. I think my server's got a gig link.

I was thinking of going draft-n too. A direct connection would be nice but it's too much work to hook up 5 computers on 3 floors. I'd have to drill holes all over the house, have hundred of feet of ethernet wires, and I'd perfer just wireless.

Granted the router isn't going to have 100% uptime, there's going to be times when it needs to be restarted, that's fine.

Hmmm I'm looking at reviews for a lot of these cable modems and a lot of people have problems with them

Have fun with the draft N's. They are not a complete standard yet and that is for a reason. If you are getting 8 Mbps from cable internet, that is probably the fastest you are going to get unless you go to a T1 line or FIOS from verizon. I agree with the rev, surfboard cable modem into a Linksys G router.

If you are looking for a better signal with less dead spots, grab the Linksys Wireless G SRX200 router. It costs more, will give you less wireless dead spots, but you connection to the internet will still be the same speed.

Hope this helps.

draft N, that's why it's still got the word draft infront of it... cause it's still in the IEEE draft stage. they are on draft 2.0 so if you get a router that has nice firmware updates, you should be ok.
