nice! All I need to do is find a drum program I like and we are off. Right now I am setting up and cleaning my bass so we can get some nice bass tracks in there too.

ok so i got everything hooked up.. heres the deal.. the xlr inputs on this thing are panned or something, so when i plug into the ch1 everything is recorded on the left side and ch2 is all to the right... is this supposed to be like that? there is an 1/8" stereo mic input here but i figured the xlr inputs would be balanced... why the eff would they have 2 seperate xlr's configured like that? is there a 1 into 2 xlr cable that i need to buy?

sounds like it is trying to use two mics in stereo. Have you messed with the input source in the software yet? What software are you using, and I already forgot which unit you decided to go with. You got the M audio mobile pre right?

yup the mobile pre... the software included is pretty basic.. it just has the level controls for volume and device output... and a direct monitor function.. it has controls for both a left and right side but tweaking them doesn't change it.. but it seems that the 2 xlr's are permanently balanced to offset one another...i tried recording a reguar (stereo) audio track in audacity and it showed that it was only recording on one side depending on which xlr input i was plugged into...

every time i post i go fuck with shit and figure something out... but i'm always left w/ a myriad of questions at every turn... ok so the xlr's are naturally set up to record on 2 mics as on stereo track. (which seems weird to me regarding the recording of vocals).. there is an option to record in mono (from the left input only)... and audacity also has such an option which will then pan the track correctly down the middle... so i essentially figured it out... but this leads me to this question... have i somehow cheapened the sound quality? my guess is no, not really because when u truly record vocals in a studio you are recording from one single source so they would be recorded as a "mono" track anyways, right? i failed math so i might have forgotten to carry a 2 in there somewhere.

my head hurts,
i want mommy.

That should not hurt the sound quality one bit. In fact that should help it over using half a stereo track. All you have to do now is work with mic positioning to see where it suits your vocals the best and you are ready to go! Now if I could only find the drum software I need.
