Considering I have negative formal education in graphic design, I'm quite proud of myself with this final copy of a banner I put together this afternoon. I did it for free too - for a bunch of dudes in some band that I'll probably never cross paths with only because I thought they fucking killed.

for the mentally handicapped, their link is:

Banners are supposed to be 468x60.

It's pretty much a graphic designing law.

also, you always want to keep animated banners under 100kb with fewer then 20 frames.

on a phone modem, that thing would take a week to load, and many places that post banners (like the top of RTTP) won't post a banner that isn't 486x60.

It doesn't look like a bad banner at all, it's just too big.

see the thread I made about a week ago for some tips on making the banners file size smaller:

thanks for the advise man. I just guessed on the size. 468x60 is obviously in terms of pixels, right? - shows how much I know....

My mistakes are obviously due to my lack of education in the successful use of such media. I never thought of it, but your comment on the load time on a dial up connection is 100% dead on. I'm getting shit prepared to make a new Burn my Remains banner and I will take your expertise into consideration.

I definitely ignored that rule...

When I started making banners I had no idea on the proper size or load time either, but SteveOTB was really helpfull, he knows his shit.

That divulsive impalement banner works fine by itself, but if someone were to put it on their myspace for example with 5 or 6 other animated banners, it would take forever to load and would slow the whole page down, even on a broadband modem.

here's the last one I did:

when I first did it, there were over 200 frames, took over 1000 kilobytes, and took like a minute to fully load.

buy reducing the colors (from 250 to 32) and cutting the frames down (I went from over 200 to under 20), I cut the file size to peices.

It doesn't even matter because that banner is the most badass thing ever.

under 100kb....is that why a lot of banners I usually see are often pixelated? - because you should reduce the colors and image quality?

troll, if you go to jasc.com you can download animation shop for free, and it's pretty easy to use from there. you can look up tutorials on google.

I use Photoshop to make the individual frames - then render each photoshop file as a .jpg and import those in Imageready with each frame being derived from the .jpg layers. or something like that...
If I had cs2 I wouldn't have to use Imageready.

I do the same thing except I put the actual gif together with Jasc animation shop. I only use that because that's what I've been using for years before Imageready started coming with Photoshop.

I used cs2 for a while and was pissed to learn that photoshop 7 didn't have the animation option. Then one day I accidentally opened a file with imageready and saw that the option was available there. Is the setup of Jasc similar to Imageready? I once researched free .gif animators and only came up with shitty programs that I was completely uninterested in using.

I will, I need to build up my portfolio anyway.

How about I just hook everyone up. No charge. Of course if I say no charge atleast give me some time considering I may have a bunch of people wanting free banners, me working full time, and playing shows. But if you don't mind slight delays I'll do it.

All I need from you is possibly a logo, a general idea of what you're looking for, what you'd like in the banner and I can basically do the rest. You can shoot me an e-mail to steve@ofthebetrayed.com with what you like.

I can make a TS banner. The more the merrier right?
I was thinking a good idea (I'm gonna do for BMR at least) would be to make one that hotlinks to your band's "add friend' myspace link rather than linking to the actual site. Anyone that clicks on it that isn't on your buddy list will get added. ...I'm sure it was already thought of.

anyone who makes the TS has to include the "Fuck your core" slogan (or whatever it was)

w00t! I kept the size relatively standard, however, I completely ignored the 20 frame law - this one is 39.
