depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend. I think my company has some $69/mo boxes available. I know that there are co-los for $50 at one place that seems reliable.
here is my company: http://www.theplanet.com/
Intel Celeron Series - 2.0+ Intel Celeron 2.0GHz+ 80GB Hard Drive 512 MB RAM $69.00

I wish I could get a p4 3GHZ with 2GB ram

I run their dedicated self management switch. it's on there for a base of $109, but if you want things added on, it's extra. In the end, I might switch to a P4 3GHz in a little while, but adding 1GB DDR2 costs you like $400. eep! I added a second hard drive a year or so ago and it was $300 to buy 80GB or $30/mo... after 11 or 12 months of playing $30 extra and sending them emails saying "take it out" and them replying "are you sure" and then me forgetting about it, they finally took it out.

colo is $60 for most guys, $50 for LUG members. I recommend theplanet.com's $69/mo. deal.

word thanks ill probably do that... what do they come installed with?

[Mar 21,2007 4:17pm - the_reverend ""]
RHE3 or 4. I suggest installing yum right away and then do a yum update against FC5, binaries.
you can pay like $25 and have other OS's installed. they might even offer that free on setup for bsd or something.

hrmmm fc is fine. i have one of those books on it so i might keep it with the repositories they suggest. u just doing ssh? or do they have something else rigged?

install whatever you want. I do ssh. I want to get xterm working so I can xterm with exceed hummingbird, but most people I've talke to either ssh, rlogin, or secure vnc over some weird port.

I'm afraid that the management overhead for xterm (exporting display) might be high

[Mar 21,2007 4:55pm - sxealex ""]
xterm exports the display? i thought not doing that was the point of xterm vs vnc. just like x but rendered remotely? no?

[Mar 21,2007 4:57pm - the_reverend ""]
xterm is an exported display (hence the x at the beginning).
once you have an xterm running GUI things are exported to your machine.

I had to call RedHat support yesterday at work. They told me "oh, RHEL5 can't do that, you should try FC5 or SUSE."

what's the L mean?
I don't dig on SUSE. don't like it at all.

oh and alex, you should just get the $89 or $109 package and get some friends to pay a monthly fee for space/hosting..

What don't you like? It seems pretty good to me. I've never used it before today. Our problem with the new redhat is that the NCP shit wouldn't work. We needed to mount our netware shares into Linux. Suse is a little more Novell friendly. Who wuddathunkit?

vsftpd isn't working right with Suse though. I have to fuck with it more.

novell? what decade is this?

alex: enterprise is usually 1 behind FC and RHE is only truly released items. no betas.

im confused as to what support they provide that a tech dood couldnt get from the internet. it doesnt make sense to me when a place that does only computers gets the supported versions. couldnt they just fix the open versions? i get like bussiness that dont know shit... but when that is your job wouldnt it be worth saving the $

We have a couple of netware servers among the 20 at my work. Novell isn't nearly as bad as people think. Netware is very similar to Linux in how it operates and is rock solid (All the web-based shit uses Apache and Tomcat for netware, too).

Novell comes up with some impressive shit. I don't think they market it properly, though. It usually doesn't catch on and then 5 years later Microsoft just copies the idea and impliments it themselves successfully.
