i wish i knew what the problem with breakdowns is. a well placed "breakdown" can make something so much more devastating.

I agree, some of the most brutal deathmetal songs have the most killer breakdowns... Suffocation and Dying Fetus are a couple of my favs that use the br00tal breakdown well. c'mon even shroud has a breakdown riff (in a more doomy sense) at the end of one of our songs (and their tears shall flood the earth)

edge of sanity has a lot of quality breakdowns. i just don't like the metalcore, 1 note, chug chug breakdowns that make up the majority of each song.

EoS is just a quality band, Cryptic was sub-par at best, and Crimson II failed to deliver the way the original did, but it was good in other aspects.

Yes. Breakdowns are OK if they are used strategically and seldom to add contrast to blistering speed. 1 note chug breakdowns = gay. Breakdowns with a "dance" feel = gay. Slow depressing sludge breakdowns that make you want to rape, kill or go out and commit some other horrendous crime =

yeah i dont care for the ones that make you want to 2 step, but the ones that make you want to punch an old lady in the face, those are fantastic. one of my top favorite breakdown-y parts is in Death Mask by Exhumed. that one slow part makes me want to rip off my head and play basketball with it.
