When did they say that, Mike? You should keep in mind that GWAR is really only big HERE. When I first heard Lordi a couple years ago, one of the guys I worked on Imhotep Zine with from Finland had no idea who GWAR was when I mentioned their similar appearance to him.
My biggest gripe is that people didn't sling shit at Marilyn Manson...who did the same with Alice Cooper as Lordi is to GWAR, unendingly. MM didn't spend his ENTIRE career being crucified for doing EXACTLY what Cooper did. The comparison of Lordi and GWAR has been made. And made, and made, and made. Everyone needs to get over it. They've enjoyed HUGE success and whether you like them or not...it's not because they look like GWAR, it's because they write catchy songs.
Lordi has packed CITIES. (Watch their show clips from when they shut down Helsinki.) They're doing something right.
And I'm annoyed with the whinebags all over blabbermouth and shit, not you DwellingSickness. I'm just so sick of people (again, not you) all yelling at me like I'm not allowed to dig them because they look like GWAR. If all merit goes out the window because a band is doing something another band did first...then you should probably throw out most of your CD's right now.
Overall, my point is, "So what?". I'm over it. Everyone else should be too.
And come on, they're MONSTERS from Finland...not ALIENS marooned in Antarctica. Har har. ;)

I think Lordi looks a hell of a lot more like Gwar than MM looks like Alice Cooper, though MM actually borrows/steals a ton from Alice Cooper musicially (but this will never be a big deal because nobody actively listens to both). Visually, Manson could be compared to many people that aren't Alice Cooper, while Lordi just looks like Gwar. I think that's the difference.
For the record, I hated Lordi before I knew what they looked like.

It's fine you hate them, and I see your point. However I feel that it turns me off more when a band SOUNDS just like another band because I don't really care what they look like. I don't think their looks should have more bearing than their sound...I mean...it's fucking music not a fashion show. But I guess that's just me.
And I used to actively listen to both MM and Cooper. I don't listen to MM anymore, but I still love Cooper.

I know what you mean, I'm just saying. I too listen to/have listened to both, but most of the Manson demographic probably isn't into Alice Cooper, especially the "real" AC that MM borrows from so heavily, which is why I suggested that it will never be as big an issue as how much Lordi looks like Gwar. Also, whether or not it matters to you, Lordi is totally where they are because of their look, good music or not.

Gimmicks get you attention, totally. But I'm telling you the Finnish population generally has no idea, nor gives a shit, about GWAR. The people who gave them a Grammy weren't like, "WOW THEY LOOK LIKE THAT BAND GWAR!" And I don't think they're where they are JUST because they wear costumes, that's silly, but you're right, I'm sure it helped.
