Assaulted and Robbed Sat Night[views:16098][posts:115]_______________________________ [May 7,2007 11:05pm - Murph ""] I was walking back to my buddy's house Sat night in Newport (he lives off Broadway, and I was piss drunk to set the scene) and stopped in 7-11 to grab a bag of chips. I stumbled out, and past a Dunkin' Donuts, then took a right up his street. I noticed, in my stupor, a young black male (this is not a racial thing for me at all) walking in front of me, and another in front of him. Three houses away from where I was staying, the young man (maybe 18-19) pivoted and sucker punched me in the temple. Suddenly, about 7-8 individuals tackled me and began to kick me in the chest and face, while screaming "Fag" and "Bitch, give us your shit now." I covered my face and ribs as best as I could, and waited until they relented, I grabbed my $ and cards from my pocket. When the young male went to grab them, I grabbed his leg, pulled myself up, and ran to the house. Luckily, I have mostly scrapes and bruises as I covered my face well, and fended off most of the blows. I don't think it was a racially motivated crime; I think that based on my dress they believed I was gay, and wanted to kick my ass and rob me: they did. I found out later tonight, from a friend, that a similar incident happened last year on the same street (very close to where I was attacked, like, within 1/2 mile) and the kid they attacked had his skull crushed and died. I'm lucky, the police so far aren't doing shit (the police station is 1/8 mi. away from where I was attacked) and the 7-11 guy is protecting them (I threatened him later that night before I went home because he sassed me when I asked him if he knew my attackers). I was setup, and these kids had definitely done this before, because it was orchestrated very well (they may be connected with that previous crime). I'm at a complete loss right now. |

I think I read somewhere that outside of Providence, Newport has the highest percentage of people living below the poverty line in RI (aka ghettos). And that's the shadiest 7-11 on the island. I know a Newport cop, but I'm sure once you say "I was drunk", they're not going to want to hear it. They'll just say you were drunk in public and it was partially your own fault. The Newport cops have absolutely no patience or tolerance for anyone drinking alcohol. |

My educated guess is because there have been a number of fine establishments that have opened in the exact area in which I was attacked, and they want to clean up that portion of Broadway so tourism will flourish.
