Relapse will do anything. They've got some good bands, but they push the crap hard.

If I remember correctly, years ago when the Grimoire of Exalted Deed (a hysterical free Metal fanzine) was being put in packages, Relapse would tear out adds of other record labels. Specifically Necropolis.

The thing is, Relapse has never released any of The Black Dahlia Murder's CDs, but they put that name on all their good CDs (i.e. Pig Destroyer, Cephalic Carnage, Brutal Truth, Coldworker, and the list goes on). And even if you don't think those CDs are "good," it's still ridiculous to lump them into the same category as a second-rate, rehashed At The Gates rip-off.

I was gonna say that. If they we're a relapse band it'd make a whole lot more sense. I'd don't think I've ever bought a CD based off the sticker than tells me what it sounds like.

The saddest part about this issue is that all the CDs I have purchased with said sticker are fucking awesome, but I don't really think TBDM are nearly as awesome as any of them. It does sell, and it gets a lot of people to get exposed to some good music, but I can't help but think it's retarded.

Grimoire used to rule so hard. The black metal reviews (even though i never agreed with half of them altogether) were brilliant.

They are far from metalcore. I don't think I've heard any "-core" elements in their music ever. I don't necessarily think they're terrible, but I've slowly grown tired of them over the past few years. I still enjoy the first EP they put out, and I liked "Unhallowed" until DrinkHardThrashHard (where the hell has he been?!) pointed out that the title track is almost a direct ATG rip-off.

Upon further inspection, I found that "Unhallowed," the entire album, is as close to a complete rip-off of "Slaughter of the Soul" as you can get without being 100% blatant. It's as if they took the blueprints to "Slaughter..." and just switched around a few parts. It was already bad enough that 90% of "metal" or "metalcore" bands were ripping off ATG (I'll even admit that my old band tried to sound like them) and doing a terrible job at it before TBDM even became established. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate TBDM, but I do think they are extremely overrated, as CTB already said, and that the fascination most people have with them is retarded and undeserved.

Haha, how the hell can anyone call them deathcore??? That is even more retarded than calling them metalcore. I've made this point before, and I've also seen Lamp make this point, that 99% of the bands labelled as "metalcore" aren't even real metalcore. Bands like Integrity, Ringworm, Converge, etc. are real metalcore: an even mix of metal elements and hardcore elements. I'd even say All Out War since they are a Slayer worship band with NY style hardcore mixed in. Most "metalcore" bands these days are Atreyu, Bleeding Through, As I Lay Dying, etc., none of which have substantial REAL metal or REAL hardcore elements. And saying that metalcore is just "metal with breakdowns" doesn't work, since most real hardcore bands don't have the style of breakdowns used in "metalcore." To top it off, most of those "breakdowns" are actually half-assed attempts at Slayer-style breakdowns (see "Raining Blood"...you know which riff I'm talking about), if you want to call them breakdowns. So, all these bands that are labelled as "metalcore" these days are just pop-metal or "mosh metal" if you want to go that far into genre-definition.

Well, that's what metalcore was used for back in the 80s before the invention of the word "crossover"(which surely enough comes from DRI as well). Metal seems to be adept at stealing punk words. The word "thrash" was used to describe hardcore well before metal, and because of what the word hardcore has morphed into, a lot of punk kids are going back to calling it thrash(though I always refer to stuff like Slayer as thrash metal so I can differentiate it) or even "thrashcore"(ala 625 thrashcore, yada yada).

The point being: fuck you.

I do what I can, haha.

I actually never knew that the word "thrash" was used before thrash metal. I guess you learn something new everyday. I feel uneasy using the word "thrashcore" since there is an electronic music genre known as "thrashcore." A lot of people have also called stuff like old Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn "thrashcore." I feel like I should call them pop metal, especially new Caliban, but I can't help that I like everything Heaven Shall Burn has put out. I guess I like 1 pop metal band, haha.

Also, while we're on the vast topic of genre abuse, I want to bring up grind. I can't really say for sure that Napalm Death was the absolute first grindcore band, but since they are pioneers and also one of the most important bands that go hand in hand with the inception of grindcore, I'm going to use them as an example. In the documentary DVD that came with the 20th anniversary edition of "Scum," several people detail how some metal elements were commonly used, even if Napalm Death were one of few to do so. Now, I have seen grindcore "purists," I guess you could say, swear up and down that grind is a sub-genre of punk and hardcore. But, if one of the first bands in grindcore took influence and elements from metal, is it really justifiable to say that grind is a sub-genre ONLY of punk and hardcore? Or are there too few grind bands on the metal side of things to accurately state that grind does in fact have metal elements?

I'm being such a nerd with music these days, but oh well. I have a thirst for knowledge, haha.

ageed. I hate OBW, I think they blow goats. Similarly, Converge was pretty much always gay, especially once they started incorporating vocal processors on that Jane Doe disc - which I should add, blew aid infected goats.

When I used to post on Lambgoat a lot a few years ago, I was practically crucified for hating Converge and Bane at first. Then more and more people came out of the woodwork, admitting to hating both bands even though they acted like they loved them for fear of Lambgoat turning on them. Oh no, an ignorant metal/hardcore forum turning on someone?! The horror!

Though I do hate Converge, some of the music is really good, but the vocals destroy it 9 times out of 10. The only material I partially like enough to listen to more than once is the split with Agoraphobic Nosebleed and most of "You Fail Me."

Yeah, so? There's electronic music called hardcore and speedcore too, that's not going to stop me from using the term hardcore to describe good old punk rock.

Well, if anything that's probably just an extreme retaliation since a lot of what people call "grindcore" these days has no punk/hardcore influence. I honestly think it draws more from punk/hardcore myself, but to say it has no metal influence at all is absurd. Stuff like that with no metal influence is what I see as powerviolence(which happens to be my forte).

Just making sure we're on somewhat of the same page with the grind debate. I've tried talking to people on this subject several times and almost no one ever recognizes the roots. Even if things change over time, there always has to be some set of initial guidelines (i.e. punk/hardcore elements). And I hear what you're saying on the thrashcore thing; having gone to Mass. Art for the first 2 years of college, I tried to avoid any discussions with the suffix "-core" since half the people there were all about noise (not noisecore, just fucking NOISE), and the other half were all about electronic music.

Next topic on Crossfire:

R & B!

Rhythm and blues, or R & B as it is popularly known, originated with artists such as Chuck Berry. How the fuck are 112, R. Kelly, Blackstreet, and other contemporary "R & B" artists called "R & B" if they have no relation to what rhythm and blues really is??? Fuck music, I'm going to rip my ear drums out and fill the canals with concrete.

Yeah I hear ya. I grew up on blues and genres close to blues; I honestly think there are more real blues sub-genres than fake metal/hardcore sub-genres created on myspace. The greats are BB King (obviously), John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, etc., etc. I consider Stevie Ray Vaughan to be one of the best blues guitarists, and my favorite of all time, even though he was more of a rock n' roll artist. Check out Buckwheat Zydeico (sp?) if you want to hear some funky blues shiznit. Some girl from MA named Susan Tedeschi is pretty good as well.
