what is the grimmest, rawest, most primitive album you know that still maintains its integrity? i've heard plenty that suck. in my quest to find it, the best one i've found is Ulver - Nattens Madrigal. that album is stunning. do tell.

i'd agree on Nattens Madrigal

Hard to top that - plenty of stuff that's rawer and more primitive, but that album's a masterpiece, IMHO.

The Old Wainds / Nav "We Are The North" split immediately comes to mind.

Old Wainds "Where The Snows Are Never Gone" isn't far behind.
http://www.mediafire.com/?b5lmlydmhn2

I'll ruminate on this and present some others.

Near impossible to name the most gritty, raw, primitive album as there are so many but Nattens Madrigal may be one of my fav BM albums ever.

Darkthrone "Under A Funeral Moon". A landmark album from one of Black metal's most influential bands - pure black metal in every sense, and I would say its probably the dirtiest sound they've ever gotten on any of their albums.

Some other raw, nasty primitive stuff I've been loving lately are Autopsy's 1987 & 1988 demos, Absu's "Temples of Offal" e.p, and Mortem's (pre-Arcturus members) "Slow Death" demo. Not really black metal, but still as grim and raw as any black metal; I highly reccomend them!

The greatness of Ofermod's "Mysterion Tes Anomias" cannot be understated, though it might not be just as "raw and primitive" as you wish. The first two tracks in particular kill.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P2338KZY

Teitanblood's demo "Genocide Chants to Apolokian Dawn" is pretty fucking raw and filthy.

I tend to go for the less "raw" Black Metal. I don't care much for the raw shit Mostly because the music itself sucks. Lame riffs that even I can come up with and sometimes the production is un-reasonably sucky.

Does Gorgoroth's "Antichrist" count as "raw?..

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World

There is nothing in the world rawer, grimmer or more primitive.

Awesome fucking record. I would say it's raw, even though the production isn't that bad - to me, the overall atmosphere and harshness gives the songs a very raw feel to them.

from what you said, i think you'd really like that old wainds record and the ofermod. the teitanblood is debatable. fuck it - i dig it. antichrist = great album all around. perfect production for that particular sound / style.

apparently i need to pick up Natten's Madrigal. i have "Teachings in Silence", but that is more fucked up ambience.

In the nightside eclipse from Emperor was the best black metal album that was bit grainy and full of Dark evil integrity IMHO maybe even Filosophem from Burzum, That mood was just amazing.

Ulvers acoustic album Bergtatt-Et Feventye or something like that was their best album.

my only complaint about "Antichrist" is that Pest's voice gets a little annoying in some parts. but otherwise that album dominates.

Kveldssanger's the acoustic album - highly recommended. Bergtatt was the first record; it's more folk-inspired black metal with clean vocals and chants.

In the Woods-HEart of the Ages is a killer album with pretty sub par production, but its not as poorly recorded as some other BM stuff

Try Ildjarn, very raw and primitive. Also, anything by Akitsa.

The Akitsa I heard was damn-near unlistenable. Same with Emit. Couldn't even make anything out from the terrible din.

Von is a good one! I'm kinda surprised no one's mentioned Hellhammer yet....those demos were some really primitive, nasty sounding stuff!
"I'm ready for slaughter..." dun dun dundundun dun dun dun.....
I think I'm going to listen to them on my way to work tomorrow.

I wouldn't consider Hellhammer black metal more than early doom/death metal. More of a stoned out Motorhead.

Yeah, but their sound had a huge influence on Black metal as we know it today and they're usually classified as a 1st wave Black metal band....hell, Mercyful Fate is considered a 1st wave Black metal group also and they sounded more like traditional/NWOBHM style metal...
Oh well, everyone's gonna have a different opinion I suppose!

Oh and Yeti already mentioned Beherit.

Bergtatt is definitely Ulver's best album with Nattens Madrigal coming in at a close second. Their demo, Vargnatt is very raw but quite goofy... almost along the lines of Ved Buens Ende or For All Tid by Dimmu with the clean vocal parts.
