A semantic riddle that I cannot seem to figure out.....

My Semantics teacher asked us to come up with a statement that:

A) Has no opinion
B) Makes sense
C) Cannot be true
D) Cannot be false

Only two people were able to figure one out [apparently there are many statements]. He said I came EXTREMELY close with "This statement is not true and not false."

Any ideas?

This statement could be true or false.

Read the latest ESPN article about how the Patriots have no running game. It has no opinion in that it's the same rehashed story that's been pumped out by 100 other crappy sports writers even after being proved wrong. It makes sense in the fact that they mention the Pats are 13th in the league in rushing. It's not false because all the statistics are correct. And at the same time it's not true because every stat contradicts the point they're trying to make.

Crappy sports writing for the win.

That statement would also involve an opinion on whether it could be true or could be false.

if the statement can be true or false
it fails that it cannot be true
and then it fails that it cannot be false

because it can be true
or
it can be false

do I have to murder you?
after a re-thought, maybe you are right.
if "This statement is not true and not false." is close.. maybe it's just
"This statement is true or false." I don;t have the time for proofs right now.

Ok, a buddy of mine came to a conclusion...allow me to describe in detail the scenario:

He said to imagine that we are all visiting an island on which the natives are hostile against foreigners. We end up going through the thick jungle and get lost, and then hear a rustling. A bunch of natives come out with spears and and immediately bring us back to their little settlement, and put us in cages far enough away from each other so that we could not speak to one another. The cheif of the tribe [who happens to speak English....] comes to the cage I [or you] am [are] occupying. He says the following....

"We are mean and to not take kindly to foreigners on our land. We will give you a chance to go free and leave our island...all you need to do is make a statement that has no opinion, makes sense, and is not true or false. If your statement is true, you will be fed to the crocodiles, and if your statement is false, you will be boiled in oil."

Now the reason I gave the scenario this time is because the answer that my buddy came up with was this:

"You will boil me in oil."

I'm still trying to understand why that is correct, however....

You can simplify that by just saying "this statement is false". It's an old riddle.

Yea I started to realize that after my buddy told me his answer...it seems like it's pretty much a statement that contradicts itself...pretty interesting.

thats what i said but i replaced "is" with "could". i figured that was it was stating a possibility rather than an opinion that it IS true or false.

thats not expressing an opinion, thats a fact. to me, "could" leaves more room for opinion...but thats just my opinion.

if its a fact then its a true statement. you gotta pick a side of the fence on that one.

If the guys was boiled in oil, the statement would be true, and he'd have to be fed to the crocodile like the guy promised. Therefore it's false, except it isn't because if the guys was boiled in oil, the statement would be true, and he'd have to be fed to the crocodile like the guy promised. does an order count as a statement?
if you tell someone to do something it has no opinion or inherent right or wrongness and it makes sense.

[Jan 4,2008 2:25am - sxealex ""]
statement

noun
1. a message that is stated or declared; a communication (oral or written) setting forth particulars or facts etc; "according to his statement he was in London on that day"
2. a fact or assertion offered as evidence that something is true; "it was a strong argument that his hypothesis was true" [syn: argument]
3. (music) the presentation of a musical theme; "the initial statement of the sonata"
4. a nonverbal message; "a Cadillac makes a statement about who you are"; "his tantrums are a statement of his need for attention"
5. the act of affirming or asserting or stating something [syn: affirmation]

order1 [ˈoːdə] noun
a statement (by a person in authority) of what someone must do; a command
Example: He gave me my orders.

so according to the dictionary your answer could be
"Eat shit."

its not an opinion its just something im telling you to do
it makes sense
its not true
its not false
