climatic vs. climactic

climactic: relating to a climax.
Ex. Winning the lottery is climactic.
climatic: relating to climate.
Ex. Weather changes are climatic.

capital vs. capitol

capitol: building where a state legislature meets.
capital: 1. city that is the official seat of government; 2. an uppercase letter; 3. (accounting def.) assets remaining after deduction of liabilities; the net worth of a business.

Tip: Remember the “o” in capitol by thinking that most capitol buildings are old. Recall two of “capital”’s definitions with this phrase: You spell a capital city with a capital letter.

compliment vs. complement:

complement: something that completes or brings to perfection. Ex.: Dark chocolate complements the strawberries well.
compliment: An expression of praise.
Ex.: My compliments to the chef.

Tip: Use the phrase “I like compliments.” To remember that compliment with an “i” is used for praise.

eminent vs. imminent

Eminent: of high rank, station.
Ex.: Eminent members of the community.
Imminent: about to occur.
Ex.: The storm should arrive imminently.

Tip: Think of the spelling similarities between the word “immediate” and “imminent,” which also have similar meanings.

assure/ensure/insure

According to their definitions, you can use assure and ensure interchangeably with little variation in meaning. While of similar meaning, use “insure” only when referring to “providing or obtaining insurance to indemnify or guarantee someone or something against a loss.”

assure: to make sure; reassure
ensure: to make sure or certain
insure: to guarantee against loss or harm; to issue or procure an insurance policy on or for.

The plural of syllabus is syllabuses not syllabi. Also data is plural so it is sometimes misused when saying "This data is..." but really it is "These data are..."

Internet mistakes don't bother me as much as verbal ones. The single most annoying error in grammar is the misuse of well/good.

If they're verbalizing it, they could be saying "could've"...
