Choosing between job offers

blows.

This always happens. After interviews and phone contact, one company extends an offer (for a great job) and wants an answer from me ASAP. However, I know for a fact that other companies will also extend offers within the next week. Now I have to decide whether or not to tell potential employer "A" yes, while intending to possibly withdraw my acceptance later when potential employers B and C offer me sweeter deals.

I could tell them I need time to decide, but sometimes people want to fill jobs quick and answers like that often scare them.

Plus I need to feel these people out and see who can fulfill my hidden agenda... time off for touring. hah

Say yes to A and work there now. If B or C gets back to you with a better offer take it and tell A to fuck their mother in the ass and walk out.

what i would say is go for the one you want to do the most. money only tides you over for so long. you have to like what you are doing.

Yeah, I hate doing that, but sometimes you just have to be an asshole and do what you have to do. I've done it before. I don't look forward to it, but I'll do it again.

Very true. If job B gets back to me and wants to hire me, it will be very close. Money will be about the same, the jobs just have certain pro's and con's.

I was thinking about maybe calling up the one I like the least and kind of asking them in a round-about way how they feel about me taking extra (unpaid) vacation time (for touring). If they say no, then I just go with the other job and cross that bridge when I get to it. And if they say yes, then I call up the other (better) job and ask them the same thing. Now if THEY say no, then I just go with the other, if they say yes, then fuck it I'll just go with them.

It does suck, but sometimes you just gotta do what is in your best interest.

Is there a way you can accept the offer but not start right away, i.e. Tell them you need to give 2 weeks to your current job? That'll buy you time, and you don't risk losing the job if the other one doesn't pan out.
I don't really think it's that big of a deal to tell them you reconsidered on their offer. It culd help you actually. If they know you got a better offer somewhere else they might up the ante. Besides that, companies often keep potential hires waiting for weeks at a time. I see nothing unethical about doing the same to them. After all, it's ultimately about your happieness, not their needs. Good luck.

Oh yup. I forgot to mention. If/when I accept, I'm going to give them a couple weeks from now as my start date so I can keep looking/waiting on the other jobs. And thanks for the good luck!

Hard, shitty decision. I was in a miserable job for a year while I built up my resume, and went through job search hell. Then on the same goddamn day I get two solid job offers.

Every company thinks they're in a rush to fill positions. If that were actually true then the hiring process wouldn't take so long. I've been given the runaround by big companies, small offices, etc. 9 times out of 10 they take their sweet time interviewing, and deliberating on applicants no matter how much they insist that they need to fill the position right away.

I waited on this one job that came down to me, and an internal applicant for weeks. In the interview they told me they really needed to fill the position ASAP. But the guy who was supposed to be making the decision on the hire took 2 weeks off without making a decision, and left me to eat shit.

At my current job we had a position open for about 8 months. In the meantime they were running the rest of us ragged trying to handle the extra work. They narrowed it down to 2 applicants. Then one of them withdrew. And it still took another month until they offered the job to remaining guy (who won the job by default).

Call company A's bluff. Corporate America is chock-full of lying cock-suckers who are just trying to get the upper hand on you. I work for a privately-owned medium sized company and I witness some of the HR bullshit that they pull here when hiring (or firing). Tell them you are very interested, but need time -- it should be your terms, not theirs, the bunch of cunts they are. I'm assuming that you are a computer hardware or programmer guy, therefore you could work anywhere.

IT poop. Network administration / consulting. I usually like staying put in one location and looking after a single network / datacenter but I think this time around I'm going to go with a consulting company that will cater to many small businesses. I'm hoping the consulting route will be more apt to let me take time off to tour now and then.

Yup. My last company was big. Their HR department was a bunch of cunts. I just wrote out a long hilarious story but I should probably keep things like that to a minimum on a public forum. haha
