question for the people who go on tour:[views:1854][posts:40]________________________________ [Jun 16,2008 10:17am - aril ""] Not that Herugrim is going on tour any time soon, but I was wondering what everyone's work does when a band goes on a short tour for, say, a week and a half to 2 weeks? I have 19 PTO days at my current job and I've already used about half of those. But, if I was going to be gone for a good 1 1/2 - 2 weeks i'd be risking my job. Too many consecutive days off. How does everyone do it? if i had it my way, i'd quit my job and be in a band all day. |

You could always go back to them or a grocery store or something. Someday you have to ask yourself if you want to be a musician or if you want to play music for fun. If it's the former, you build your life around that and try to get your music to finance being alive. If it's the latter, you get a legit job and hope the band coincides somehow. |

Sometimes they tend to be pretty lenient about those things. Either that or just landscaping. I'm lucky with the job I have now though. My new boss has been cutting me a lot of slack for the band, even when I was outta work for 3 weeks for my surgery. He's still giving me the time off for the tour in July, and he said once those things start becoming a more common occurrence to let him know, so we can sit down and talk about what we're gonna do. He basically knows I'll happily leave that job if they ever try to interfere with the band, and he told me a little while ago I'm the best he's got there. I basically have it somewhat lucky for now anyway. |

Ever since my old boss got fired the place has gone downhill, the new asst. manager (who knows nothing about cars and openly admits it) is having a horrible power trip, the place is a mess and so much shit changed. I was the one who cleaned things up, told the asst. manager exactly how it is, got the other employees back in shape (I have seniority over a lot of people there, so I can do that as long as I'm nice about it, which I am), and just brought the shop back to somewhat normal, and that's what my boss loves about me. The fact that I take a big leadership role and I know what has to be done, so I pretty much know I'll only be leaving that job on my own decision, and trust me I don't wanna be working at a lube shop forever, so chances are once I get my inspection license (within a month) I'm gone. |

I am so stretched thin with bills and my position (mandatory 48 hours) that all I'm left with is 80hrs vacation time a year. Which they are also dicks about. I'm not in a band but I do many shows (hip hop) from NH to MA. My boss is ok about letting me out early but I still rush to every show which I hate to do. But in march I did take 12 days which is unheard of and did a tour through NC, MD, NY, OH, IL, VA. Taking your paid time to sleep on floors is awesome. I get more time in September and all I can think of is going out again. But that's about it, if it was some extended thing I wouldn't be able to which is disappointing to think about. My life is about music and I'd like nothing more than to do it constantly, but wanting to have a decent car and a place to live fucks that up quick. I'd love to simplify and strictly perform, but what would I retire with? |
