I think that any of the ones for Death (DC) and Sandman (DC) would be amazing.

i just purchased arkham asylum. gonna begin that after contagion, though i should read the entire series before moving on. i've heard only great things about watchmen. i remember reading maus in high school, but never read part 2. anyone ever read marvel zombies? i've picked up and thumbed through the walking dead, but am reluctant to throw twenty bucks away at a bad graphic novel. but if you're all suggesting it, i'll have to think twice about it next time i go shopping for books.

Preacher, one of the best graphic novels ever. You can't go wrong with a comic that includes a comic-ized Bill Hicks performance.

DC's kinda candy-assed sometimes, but check out Justice and Kingdom Come, they're by Alex Ross, who is the man. Speaking of Ross, check out his Marvel series MARVELS, it's pretty cool as well.

New England Comics has a sale running throughout august. 20% off of graphic novels. that might help yer wallet a bit.
also, since i'm pimping the Walking Dead so much, the trades range from $10-13. and they're written by Robert Kirkman, the same guy that wrote Marvel Zombies. I actually haven't read MZ, but i've heard nothing but good things about it.

If you want to see a lot of where a lot of elements for The Dark Knight came from, read The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween.

For series, I agree with Watchmen, and definetely Preacher. Sandman is a nice escape, a little more highbrow.

Mouse Guard, Path, The Goon, The Maxx, Wanted, Batman: Hush, Secrets, War Drums and all other previously mentioned series, Justice, Kingdom Come, anything Alex Ross does, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Ojo, Sandman, of course Sin City, The Fountain. I'm sure more will come to me.

Anything by Frank Miller or Alan Moore automatically kills. If you haven't read Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, you haven't read comics.

Yar - all my friends in Worcester are obsessed with this. I haven't had a chance to read more than an issue and a half, but it does seem to rule.

Just got into these recently; the pop culture references are amazing, but it's a solid book besides. Great shit.

Totally seconded, but you also need The Killing Joke (Alan Moore). That's the other half of the puzzle with The Dark Knight, in my opinion (and it's amazing besides). Grab Batman: Year One (Frank Miller) to get the comics version of Batman Begins, while you're at it.

If you're at all into crime books, or if you appreciate Quentin Tarantino's work but would like it minus all the faux-cool posing, you must own all of Stray Bullets. It's completely fucked, and highly awesome.

I love the idea of graphic novels (who doesn't like comic books?)

Unfortunately, most try to be too arty. Fuck arty fiction.

Fuck arty art.

The only true art is VON and PROFANATICA.

yeah, it's looking like Kirkman is setting Carl up to be the primary character, but i don't think rick'll be going anytime soon. after all the shit that just happened, that'd be too much. ya never know with kirkman, tho.

Is that the same as the Elektra one from Miller? The one I'm thinking of is with her and she beats everyone's ass (Daredevil, Bullseye, and the Hand). Also, it has Bullseye's death (Right after he kills a fly on the wall with a straw and some water).

Some of my favorites are

Batman: Hush, Year One, Ego, Black and White, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, War Games, Gotham by Gaslight.
Green Lantern: starting with Rebirth all the way up to the Sinestro Corps War is one of the best books in all of comics.
Daredevil: The entire volume 2 is awesome. So is the Frank Miller omnibus.
The New Frontier. Weapon X. Trinity. Sleeper. Green Arrow. Identity Crisis. The Boys. The Mask. Wolverine: Origin, Enemy of the State. Planet Hulk. Battle Pope. Hitman. Infinite Crisis. Watchmen. Superman: Emperor Joker. The Flash: the entire Geoff Johns run. Starman. Invincible. Walking Dead. Gotham Central. X-Men: Inferno. Kingdom Come. Y: The Last Man. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Justice by Krueger and Ross. The Ultimates. Catwoman: When in Rome. Spider-Man: Blue. 300. The Pro. Marvels. Justice Society of America and Criminal.

Pires, I don't know what you're doing for schooling after CCRI, but I know URI offers a Graphic Novel class and it is supposedly really good. I had the professor for another class and she's terrific.
