However, I think people need a unifying narrative to life, and absent science having a clue, people turn toward abstractions. From a philosophical viewpoint, what is most important is how they structure their beliefs, not what they name it. I think it's telling that our founding Fathers were "Deists," which is a codeword for religious people who like God but think Jesus was a nutball. Interestingly, the type of Christianity that isn't insane -- transcendental idealism, versus symbolic dualism -- tends to be the province of the above-120 crowd. The majority of the smart people I encounter are of this type, and the rest are dispassionate atheists. Apply eugenics, and you get a smarter Christianity... well whoda thunk it. |
