I'm about to order a dell xps config, and for 60-70 extra bucks it comes with one of those.

Just how usable are they though?

I barely watch TV and pretty much anything I would watch on TV I just download offline.

is it worth the few extra bucks though? anyone have one and like it?

I have one of those haupagewhatever ones. it's ok, but it was a better idea then anything else. especially with dtv coming online.

that's the card that comes with the system.

Do you just plug a coax into the card and you're ready to start changing channels?

Or do you need some gay hardware and service form your cable provider?

also, I'm constantly being told not to bother getting more then 3 gigs of ram because apparently vista 32bit can't make use of more then 3.3

so should I save myself the 35 bucks and hit up the 3gs of RAM rather then 4?

are you going to upgrade this computer to x64? if no, don't buy. if it's going to be a year before you go to x64, save the cache and stick with 3GB until then.

tuner cards have a coax plug, but they don't have Dtv so already a lot of cable channels are going away and in 4 months, all channels will go away so you will need a DTV converter OR another digital cable box.

So basically for casual TV watching, I'm better off saving the 60 bucks and just downloading shows/movies like I have been?

yeah. unless you actually want to rip shows/movies and put them online yourself (and who the hell wants to do that) don't bother. also, go for 64bit windows if you can. all that hardware can run 64bit. vista 64bit is far faster than 32bit on the same machine.

you could probably get the same computer much cheaper if you wanted to build it yourself, but a couple hundred more with a dell warranty and everything done for you might not be worth the hassle.

That's the thing, I priced it all out and if I built it myself I'd only be saving like 130 bucks, but wouldn't get adobe elements, online backup, or a warrantly.
