owning an actual copy of any album is much better than DLing it.
yes, I still buy CDs. only when I can though. I'm flat broke and half of my office just got laid off. hopefully I don't!

Kinda true. All my CDs are fucked up. It's easy to scratch them or have that weird foil shit peel off.

Also all my CDs from the 90's degraded so badly in their cases that I can't even pay them.

Also, most cars do not have record players; thus your vinyl collection is 95% less likely to be stolen by nigras.

For the most part, I only listen to music in my truck. My truck has a CD player. I buy CDs.

dude. if i managed to keep track of my cds over the years, which many have been stolen, victims of car abuse, decay, etc... i'd probably have 1/4 that collection, IF that.

right now i have a paltry stack of cd's and vinyl but 500GB of quality stuff like everyone else.

No. But I don't download either. I just listen to my favorite bands all of which I got into between 10 and 30 years ago. I am perfectly happy with that.

Me too, with a few exceptions (new Skepticism, Lord Wind, etc.)

Pretty sure my mp3 player just died (computer doesn't recognize it, makes a skipping noise when turned on). Need to pick up something that'll let me connect the 1.8" drive directly to my computer to see if I can just copy the data to my hard drive or if I have to re-rip a shitload of music and lost a bunch of photographs forever.

Vinyl>CDs>mp3s>cassingles

To make it short, I just dissected the mp3 player and 1.8" drive; didn't suffer a head crash, but the motor's dead. Technologay.

I'm actually trying to get rid of a lot of my CDs. I used to be an addict and would collect everything from every band I'm into, but not anymore. If I absolutely have to have a CD, I will buy it. I'll download everything I can, and buy the stuff that I really like. Everything else either gets deleted or forgotten. I'm much more apt to buy from independent bands though, even if the CD isn't going to be a favorite.

CDs are great for discographies or other long releases, but vinyl is the optimal format for split releases and short stuff(7" records). I'm torn.

The quality of sound on a new vinyl is amazing. The exact waveform of the music recorded is printed on the vinyl. On a CD, it's transformed into 0s and 1s and then transformed back. We actually went over that in one of my classes everyday and that reduces the quality a lot. I'm sure most of you knew that already.

So Vinyl > CDs in terms of quality. The opposite of that for convenience.

I used to be like that wicked bad. I had to have single thing by a band I got into. Every single, split, every stupid compilation track etc etc. Even comps where every other band on it sucked. I realized that I wasn't even listening to most of the stuff beyond the initial listen when I first got it.
Long story short, I'm not like that anymore.

Yeah I look at my collection and realize I could do without half of it. I've already sold about 200 CDs, thrown away 100 and trying to sell another 100 or so. This still leaves me with about 800 CDs though.

I'm going through a major CD collecting phase haha! I'd be doing some downloading as well, but I have no space on my hard drive... which should change soon.

On that note: any external hard drive recommendations from you guys? cheap, but good?

Look at Western Digital. Mine is 250GB and I got it for 100 or so. Awesome deal.

crazy talk. The way i see it, vinyl has always had a draw from a select group of elitists who believe it's truer to the real sound (cue arguments backing up this point) and that will never change, and there are a lot of them.

or

it's people who download most music. And if they really want to support an artist they'll buy a CD, but why not buy the LP if you have the player. You can display the artwork and shit.

I've been buying stuff lately. It's a lot more satisfying for some reason.

I'll buy a CD from a band at a show...but that's pretty much the only circumstance.

Acquiring CD's and vinyl has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was a kid. For me, owning actual copies of my favorite band's recordings is tantamount to collecting pieces of art. Artwork and lyrics (if included) help to greatly enhance the overall experience of an album.

Plus, it doesn't hurt to support the bands you like.

Nope. I'll support the artist by downloading their album from itunes or something but I don't even own a cd player since the last one (probably my 20th) fucking broke. Shits get scratched, lost, and the players always break. I also buy merch and tickets.

I am lazy and refuse to lug around a bunch of CDs when I could pocket an mp3 player and have everything I want.

I realize this makes me un-kvlt, fortunately I don't care.

I have one iPod that only works as a hard drive

another that only plays...doesn't accept things being added or removed

and another that just stopped being anything more than a hunk of plastic and metal

I'm not sure I like iPods anymore.

I've had 3 iPods over the past 4 years and have never had any problems whatsoever. Only got new ones to upgrade to larger sizes. I'd be 100% lost without an iPod, since I use it all day at work, when I work out, whenever I'm in the car (which is a fucking lot) and if I end up walking around somewhere for a while. CDs become quite the nuisance in those cases.
