What the title says. I've been playing this:

LTD B155

through this:

AMPEG SVT3 PRO

into this:

AMPEG CLASSIC 15"

and a crap Carvin 15" cab for some time, nao. The super warm/hot punchy mids are there in spades, and I've tweaked it a whole bunch lately to where I was really happy with that part of the sound, but that really excessive growly overdrive just wasn't there until I hit on the idea of putting this:

TECH21 SANSAMP BASS DRIVER DI

in front of the amp. Drive close to full, presence backed off a bit, treble up a bit, bass backed off plenty, and tweak the blend to where the punch is there but backed up by the growl. WTF - totally psyched with the possibilties, here. I still need to tweak a bit before practice to find the right mix, but it sounds fucking gigantic, now. Chords are just mosntrous and warm, B-string play isn't rumbly and duck-fart-y, everything is lovely. PSYCHED.

(To be fair, I just stole this from Alex Webster - saw that he was running a SansAmp in front of his SVT4 somewhere whilst trolling around trying to find a backup of the Bassists of Death forum, figured I'd try it. What I'm rocking now is pretty much a ghetto version of his setup. Which is just fine by me. Now just to find a cheap as free Ampeg 8x10. LOL)

Youd have a lot easier time if you had some ten inch speakers in that rig. And dont count out a pickup change.

10 inch speakers with a sub low pass will give you usable low end down to 26hz. the difference is noticeable, especially if you plan on using a 5 string.

ampeg 4x10 HLF por vida

Yeah, 10 inchers would def be my preference, but new gear money is going to be a while in coming. Pickups might be a possibility in the near future, but that brings of back to the "active or no" debate. YER THOTS?

BTW, Blue's Clues, your ever-vigilant gear feedback is much appreeshed. I almost want to lure you down to the Worcester space with some greenbacks/bud and have you solve all our problems, but our guitarist's ghetto rig might make your head asplode. LOL

I'm afraid that the only correct bass tone involves Sunn 300t

seriously, the best tone i have ever had was from an 80's randall guitar head. it JUST shit the bed on me... but before that, it was the best metal bass tone i have ever had. it was being played through my shitty huge peavey 4x10 700 watt cab.

you apparently havent played with any Eden heads before...

The SansAmp gets a lot of love on the bass forums, and I agree. One of the only bass ODs I've heard that isn't trying to be a guitar pedal. Very versatile, as well.

yeah Steve your bass was very audible at practice.

oh and triple post WUT?!

but yeah... i'd say go with active preamp/passive pick ups. well since you are dirtying up your sound with the sans amp anyway... i guess active pick ups would be fine. i never really cared a whole lot for active bass pick ups. i always thought it was too much. *shrug*

I don't even play bass. I just know what's behind a lot of tones I enjoy. I just like a powerful, present tone. And the gain stage of that amp is crazy.

I'm checking out Eden videos now. I can tell it's a sweet amp, but it's mostly this dude playing stock, clean funk bass lines at NAMM. Different amps for different things.

I'm still experimenting with my sound. Everytime I think I'm happy with it I change my mind.

my recommendation is to sell the carvin 1x15 (why you have 2 15s and no 10s is beyond me) and pick up a 2x10 cab to put on top. you'll have a hell of a lot easier time not muddying up your sound.

as far as replacement pickups are concerned, you have only so many options because your bass is routed to take EMG pickups. i have a feeling you'd probably be satisfied with getting a set of EMG 40DCs in there, it'll give you all the output you'll need and youll mess yourself with how huge it'll sound with the sansamp. i'd recommend upgrading the preamp in the bass too if you're going to go that route though. basically its 2 choices: money to burn - EMGs, no money to burn - passives.

Why 2 15s is just 'cause that's what I stumbled into for no money. *shrug* Not ideal, but it makes the loud. That's definitely in my game plan, though.

Blue, you have stock in a 9v battery manufacturer, don't you? LOL

Thanks, dude. I'll look into it.

SRSLY, talk to me in the springtime. Once it's not fucking freezing in my basement I should have a pretty decent workshop set up.
