Anybody hike?
Been on two this year already. Will probably head out for one this afternoon. I'd like to do a big hike once a month with smaller 5 mile journey's once a week.

Yep. Its great to just go out on a beautiful day and just listen to nothing but the sounds of nature. It sounds really cliche but it really puts you at peace with the world.

Did some stomping around Blue Hills this past weekend. Obviously nothing as cool as the picture above, but definitely something I'd like to get into when the weather improves.

Yeah I was Purgatory last week. Funny found some kids smoking a blunt, walked away to smoke with friends, only to discover more kids smoking pot. Upon greeting these strangers, dozens of stoners emerged from all over the place in and out of the chasm. Like 30 kids all stoned as fuck climbing on sick rocks.

This happened to me one time skiing at Wachussett Mountain. It was pitch black while we smoking, heard whistling and saw lighters blaring. So we followed it and smoked their much better weed with them. good times.

I didn't take this, it's from the Franconia Notch area website, but it could be, although it looks like the rise on the left is higher. Not familiar enough with the area to make a judgement, but the line in the valley is definitely a road. Helpful, I know.

Best panoramic view of the whites: bond cliffs

Good times to be had at saddleback, no name, mini saddle back and the horn in wrangely, maine. a great ridge run and solid way to bag a few 3k footers in a rather short but grueling distance. excellent exposure on the backside of the horn.

best place to see bear: the pemmigawasset wilderness below the bonds and mt guyot also the sandwich range (all wooded summits). all NH.

best place to "poach" a good stay: amc trail maintenance hut off of hogan rd in gorham.

best spot for beers: moat mountain, north conway, NH.

i want to get a small group together and head to Burnt Hill in Heath, MA. i've read about some ancient stone croppings up there, its roughly where "The Dunwich Horror" takes place. its also fairly close to a place called Dighton Rock which has some ancient carvings in the stone.

I must chime in on Dighton Rock, as it's fairly close to where I live.
The real Dighton rock is no longer there. It's in a museum. There are a number of speculations as to what Dighton Rock's markings are; some people think they are of Norse origin. It's really strange and was just anothher OoPA (out of place artifact), must like the Dorchester Pot

but if you're looking for hills and stuff, I wouldn't want those places. Massasoit in Taunton has some nice rocky trails and decent lake views.

Make sure you bring along 50 feet of rope, At least 6 torches, iron rations, and a ten foot pole for trapfinding.

honestly, when I went to the Hockomock, I brought rope (there's something which resembles quicksand there), a compass, a map, a flashlight and some water. it's right in the heart of the bridgewater triangle.

i guess its really difficult to get into Hockomock now, with all the attention its had there have been swarms of cops around. but that is only what i've heard. yeah i know Dighton Rock was moved, i'd like to see it. Burnt Hill intrigues me though.

the thing i really want to see is the rune carvings that apparently say "Leif Erickson 1001" on a rock on "Noman's Land". i guess no one can get to it because the island was used as a bombing site for decades.

[Mar 30,2009 1:16pm - aril  ""]
hockomock? nah. it's huge and is literally in 4-5 towns. there are many entrance points; perhaps the easiest being near where the Raynham dog track was.
it's intriguing nonetheless due to its rich history and rumors.
people have claimed to see USOs (UFOs that land and go underwater), Bigfoot, giant turtles, giant birds, ghosts - you name it, it's been rumored.
of course, who knows about any of that stuff, but it's a good hike if you don't mind going off of the trail for a bit. thing is, people have ventured in there and never came out. the natives were afraid of the swamp as well.. it's definitely a good experience for people that like hiking and/or paranormal stuff.

dude i'd love to explore that swamp, i've read about it for years. if i venture into a "haunted" swamp and don't emerge due to being devoured by a shoggoth or Mind Flayer or some kind of Lovecraftian style beast, then what a fitting end.

"Mrs. Jordan, your son is dead"

"how did he die??!!!"

"he was eaten because he awoke a slumbering demon from the ancient world"

"well, i'm not really surprised"

RE: why this makes sense (and why I'm pretty decent at running around in the woods)

Pretty sure I've talked about this on the site before, but my dad was pretty much IRL Solid Snake. (errr... or Snake, or Big Boss, or whatever the 60's version was. I mean, he wasn't a clone or anything. I think. LOL) I.e., his thing was infiltration, wilderness survival, "non-lethal kills", demolition, paratroop stuff, sharpshooting, etc. He mostly worked in the US doing security test stuff (i.e., hang out in a swamp for a few months, then break into an airbase or a sub base or whatever with no weapons or uniforms or anything, just to prove that it could be done, and they needed to beef up the watches). As he put it, "I don't know that I ever killed anybody, but I definitely put a lot of guys in the hospital, and I kinda feel bad about that." Make of that what you will. Then he spent some time training Marines in jungle survival for a little "police action" in SE Asia we were getting ready for. They eventually asked him to do some stuff he wasn't comfortable with (as I understand it, it involved dispensing with the "non-lethal" thing and going to Eastern Europe during the 60s - again, make of that what you will), so he dropped out and became a hippie. Headband and all. LOL

I didn't even know ANY of this crap until a few years ago - growing up, I knew he was in the military, jumped out of planes, blew up a bridge or two, and that's it. I eventually asked him what the hell he did a few years back, and he told me the above. I kinda gather that he's not super proud of all of it, which is probably why I never heard about any of it, and also why I don't doubt the veracity of all of this (Dad's not the type to make up stories, he's got plenty of real-life weirdness to draw on). Kinda blew my mind - also makes me glad I never ended up trying to swing on him as a teenager. LOL Now he just travels around the world to weird 3rd world countries and hikes a lot, although he did spend some time a few years back driving around North America doing suspiciously well at long-distance air rifle competitions for a 75 year old man. Hmmm...

Glendale Falls in Middlefield is one of my favorite places around. Bash Bish is cool as well. Was once rated as the most dangerous tourist destination in the world by AOL travel. I believe it was based upon the amount of visitors divided by the amount of accidents/deaths that befell the aforementioned visitors.
