It runs on Windows, you can grab it at http://www.derekyu.com/games/spelunky_0_99_8.rar You're a little archaeologist who runs around a mine (at first), whipping snakes, avoiding traps, getting treasure and rescuing damsels. The controls are pretty straightforward and there's a tutorial. I've been playing this for months so I figured it's good enough to share if you don't know about it already. The game is harsh, almost Nethack harsh. But it is quite winnable. There are many, many ways to die but it's very satisfying when it all comes together. The levels themselves are generated randomly so each game is different (a very good generator, I might add). There are a lot of tricks to learn, but here's a couple ones you should know off the bat: 1. Most critters can be hurt by jumping on them Mario-style. This will also soften the fall from a long jump. Don't try this with carnivorous plants (although if you have the Spiked Shoes item you can hurt them too). 2. You will be hurt falling off ledges that are 3/4 screen high. Ease yourself over a ledge, then drop, and you won't be hurt. 3. Arrow traps are triggered by any moving object in front of them, but only fire once. 4. When you get the "chill up your spine" warning, that means a ghost will appear shortly. As far as I know they're unkillable so get to the exit fast. 5. You can't jump onto spikes, but you can walk through them. You can also ease yourself down through them. I think it took me about 200 tries before getting to the end. Even if you die alot, relax, it's a difficult game until you get the hang of it. |
