Right-wing/left-wing: what do they mean?[views:2136][posts:15]_________________________________________ [Apr 23,2009 3:38pm - Conservationist ""] The right wing, who are inherently collectivists, realize that the individual never trumps the group; as part of this, they deign to subsidize those who do not contribute to the group. The left wing, who are inherently individualists, say that no individual should ever be subjected to torture, even if the collective is threatened, because the principle of being immune to society is most important. http://www.amerika.org/2009/social-reality/we-live-on-different-planets/ This seems historically accurate in a de Toqueville or Huntington sense. However, it suggests that the American conservatives are off-base and trying to be liberal, and that's why they always run into logical paradoxes while demanding individual freedom yet higher defense spending, greater infrastructure, supply-side economics, etc. |

Maybe these terms just need re-inventing. After all, the principle is clear: collective (including non-shithead individuals) or individual (which requires you include everyone especially whiny shitheads)? |

It definitely applies to what most people refer to as the "Neo-Conservative" Republicans. They aren't going to win by out-"freedom"ing the left. The left offers "freedom" (if you don't define your terms, you win) plus a welfare state. They also haven't convinced any of the more traditional conservatives, so they're stuck with pentacostals and apocalyptics. |
