I'm retiring my venerable GK 800rb, for it has served me well and i'm ready to move on. But ive been playing this thing for so long I barely know where to start with looking for a new one. My only complaint about the GK was it was too clean, great low end and loud as hell but didnt cut through the mix very well. I need the low end boomyness, but im looking for something with a hint of that lemmy-esque growly midrange. I played an svt 350 at mr music and definitely dug that shit, but they sold it. Suggestions?

I have a great Peavey Centurion I bought and just fixed. They are from the early 80's / late 70's (this one is 78) and they go for cheap money on the original dollar. They take a fucking beating and a half, and are very modable.

The only thing is the power supply caps may have gone and then it's an easy swap to do it yourself. I did it in like an hour the other night.

Food for thought before you shell out 900$ for a tube bass head.

And you can always put either a tube preamp, or a tube stomp box in front of it. Or just throw a really nice overdrive on it with a pickup booster and you'll get that "cut" of a tube amp. Since it's bass, it needs less work to get the right "sound" from it, as opposed to the hell that getting guitar frequencies to sound right can be.

Dan Lilker uses a Sansamp (guitar) amp modeler for his sound.

This one is also pretty good, though I've had problems with them in the past. If you're good at fixing shit, go for it.

These are fucking AWESOME. I mean, talk about fucking massive sound. You could really beat the shit out of this too. One thing I can say about Peavey is they know how to make amps, or at the very least used to know how to make amps really fucking well hahahah.

All the old Peavey shit has clean, well put together electronics, set up in an easy to understand and repair manner. I've fixed two of them myself and am working on a third.

If I needed a head, I'd go for this. Cheap money and it will last you. Even if you have to replace a few parts it will work out better than payng $650 for some amp that the company will never stand by.

Peavey has mailed me for free 70's schematics they keep on hand and told me about past problems people have had to fix so I can solve the issue without a costly repair.

I'd also peep some old Ampeg.

I've never owned any of their gear but Howie swears by his and we got some cool sounds out of it.

Also I'd keep my eye out for a good, transparent power amp. You can always shape your sound with a low-power head you like and then juice it up with a power amp to push an 8x10. Don't feel like the watts should be your final deciding factor.

i've been using a mark 4 peavey head on my rig for the last 12 years. I'll swear by it. it's gone through much beer spillage and it still works perfect. it cuts through absolutely perfect.

i'm using a peavey mark VI head to power my ampeg 8x10. it has more than enough power, it's solid, and has tons of features. you need to crank the preamp volume and nurse the post volume to get some grit and presence out of the eq and with the right bass it will cut through any mix. i imagine the peavey centurions perform similarly.

the sans amp di is a beautiful thing. they make a three channel programmable floor unit that is the same price as the one channel unit. it has crazy tone. will spice up a low output bass, act as a standalone preamp, use it for direct recording in the studio/live. i've been in many situations where i needed to just pull it out and use it...

so dirty.
