I know a lot of people hate his vocals to begin with, but on the early albums it just worked. I also enjoyed his lyrics, I found them to be clever, and in the case of Black Friday, pretty fucking sinister. He needs to score a bag of dope and start hanging out with Chris Poland again. |

I guess it's cool that he's trying to get back to basics and play straight up metal again, but for me, it's not the same; something's amiss. I'm not saying this is piss poor music by any stretch, but it doesn't caprture the same feeling as say, RiP or Peace Sells. Megadeth is responsible for getting me into metal in the first place, so I just assume my opinions will most likely differ from yours. |

People who liked the first two or three but were a little -- "eh" --- about Rust In Peace will not be interested in this one. People who liked the first 4 albums will think this is good if they can ignore the spoken word intro things (Dave Mustaine pretending to be a cop etc) and still slightly goofy lyrics (much better but still kinda retarded) It's not going to blow their minds but it's enjoyable power thrash. People who liked anything after Rust In Peace will splooge in their pants. |

__________________________________ [Sep 22,2009 7:09pm - kessaris ""] I've listened to this about 4 times front to back now and I think overall this is a great album. It's not their best, or second best...but it's hard when your best is Rust in Peace and your second best is Countdown to Extinction. This is definitely #3 though. I'd compare it most to So Far...So Good...So What in that it's a fast paced shredder...except it sounds great. Production value is top notch. I don't think it's selling as much as it should which is a shame. The one thing I don't get is people crapping their pants over Marty Friedman and Chris Poland still and not giving Chris Broderick a chance. The fact is Broderick is light years ahead of both of them in terms of technicality and ability. He's got talent up the asshole and nobody really seems to notice, but it's hard to miss because his playing is the pride of this album. I just wish people would sort of open their eyes to it. Maybe if he Megadeth keeps putting albums out in the direction they are heading then people will finally cave into the truth and that is Broderick is by far the best musician to ever be in Megadeth. I think people aren't going to ever put this album in the same graces as Countdown or RIP because of pure cynicism. Thats everyone else's right to do, but the fact is this CD is better than SFSGSW, it's better than Peace Sells, it's better than Killing is My Business and it's better than all the other albums. A new third best album in Megadeth's 13 album career (I'm counting Hidden Treasures). 1 Rust in Peace 2 Countdown To Extinction 3 Endgame 4 Peace Sells...But Who's Buying 5 So Far...So Good...So What!? 6 Hidden Treasures 7 Killing is My Business...And Business is Good 8 United Abominations 9 Cryptic Writings 10 Youthenasia 11 The System Has Failed 12 The World Needs a Hero 13 Risk I guess if I had to rank them that's how I'd do it. I think this album is great from top to bottom, not a bad song in there. Then again, I'm probably the only person around here who didn't pop this CD on and look for flaws in it. Top notch in my book. |
___________________________________________ [Sep 22,2009 8:16pm - MikeOfDecrepitude ""] I don't know if I agree with your opinion on Broadrick being the best second guitarist of Megadeth, especially in comparison to Marty Friedman, but the guy is obviously a talented guitar player, no question. Actually, no, I don't agree. Nor can I agree with the opinion that this album is better than Peace Sells. Nooo way. The songwriting and attitude of Peace Sells is in a league of its own, and nothing can touch an album like that. Even while being shorter in duration than Endgame, Peace Sells has some of the nastiest riffing in metal's history. Bad Omen, alone, is a testament to that. However, this album has been growing on me and I've been listening to 44 Minutes all day. I somewhat retract my statement about his lyrics being weak, because that's probably my favorite part of 44 Minutes. Nothing poetic, but I feel they do the incident of the North Hollywood Shoot-Out a lot of justice. It's just a well written song. bennyhillifier |
___________________________________ [Sep 22,2009 8:20pm - spaldino ""] i thought 44 Minutes was the best song on the album from the get go. Nothing is better than Rust in Peace, the song writing is just too good on it. |
__________________________________ [Sep 22,2009 8:52pm - kessaris ""] On the contrary. I think this album is a testament to Mustaine's ability to scrap everything he's done from Youthenasia on and start fresh. Every song on this CD has a ferocious quality that has been absent from this band since the early 90's. I think this is the type of stuff Mustaine should have been doing since 2004 but he always wanted the CD to have a little bit of everything and was hesitant to pull the trigger and make this band the metal band they needed to be all along. See though, people still kiss Marty Friedman's ass for being in Megadeth. Need I remind you that he was the 2nd guitarist on Risk!? The reason people will say Friedman over Broderick is because most people have only heard this 1 Megadeth album. The guy is almost 40...he's got a few releases under his belt. I'd say go do your research before passing a full judgement on him. And who better to talk about this than Mustaine himself, who has played with Poland, Friedman and Broderick and even he says Broderick is "10 times the guitarist Marty is". And it's not bullshit either. Go look up Chris Broderick on youtube and then tell me he isn't the man. Argue whatever you want, but Broderick is a superior player in every way. I've been following both Megadeth and Broderick since my adolescence. Plus he's a cool dude who gets me into his shows for free I guess in the end, like I said, people aren't going to give this album a chance to be the album it is. While you're right, Peace Sells is a classic album that set the standard for metal in the 80's, I'm looking at the big picture. I'm taking all things into account and just saying Endgame is a better album. You can tell Mustaine has a chip on his shoulder now and wants to prove that he's still got what it takes to make Megadeth the best band out there. I think this album bleeds passion in a completely different and far more mature way than Peace Sells does. This isn't about out doing Metallica like Peace Sells. It's about Megadeth, pure and simple and to me it's already a classic Megadeth album. I just wish people would sit back, forget everything from Youthenasia to United Abominations and say yeah, this is definitely Megadeth. |
_____________________________ [Oct 6,2009 2:22pm - BSV ""] Been listening to this album ALOT. I might be so bold to say that this work could clearly make MEGADETH the winner. Talked alot about this the other night with my drummer-Thrash comes so naturally to Mustaine while Hetfield and Urlich have struggled to make a catchy album for 12 years. The playing is top notch, it's technical, memorable, heavy, fast, and most of all direct. |

__________________________________________ [Oct 6,2009 3:16pm - mikeofdecrepitude ""] Or perhaps, Kessaris, it just comes down to a matter of personal preference? And it's like, so cool that Broderick has gotten you into shows for free. I know I'm impressed, at least. So it's now a solid fact, according to you, that Broderick is indeed the best 2nd guitarist Megadeth has ever had. Well now, I stand corrected. Need I remind you that Friedman was also the guitarist in Cacophony and played on Rust in Peace (only one of the finest metal albums of all time, no big deal)? There's a reason why Friedman is respected, and there's also a reason why people will be more partial to their older material. Like I said, the new album has grown on me, but just because Mustaine says Broderick is better than Friedman or Poland doesn't mean we have to agree with him. Dave's not god and he's been known on many occasions to talk out of his ass. |
_____________________________________ [Oct 6,2009 6:32pm - ArrowHeadNLI ""] Mike, man, I hate to tell you but Friedman is NOT worthy anymore. Have you heard his last album? J-pop covers of Rust in Peace songs, shit guitar work, and he has become (or actually ALWAYS WAS) very un-metal. Dave brought out some of the best in Friedman. He also saw fit to fire him, and even extended the re-invitation to Marty who blew it AGAIN a few years ago demanding money and shit. bennyhillifier Seriously... you're trying to compare this guy to Chris Broderick, a guy who has spent a HELL of a lot longer playing metal than Friedman EVER did? No way man. Friedman is great, so was Cacophony, but the guy is a collosal wank that not only played on R.I.P., but also helped steer the band to record RISK. Stop giving this cock-stain so much credit. He helped kill Megadeth in the first place. Why would he play on the comback albums? |
________________________________ [Oct 6,2009 6:36pm - Martins ""] Marty has always, always been a great instrumentalist and he's made/been a part of some awesome music with Rust in Peace, Cacophony, and his solo album Dragon's Kiss. Everything else he's done is a fucking joke. |
__________________________________________ [Oct 6,2009 6:45pm - mikeofdecrepitude ""] Yeah and let me guess, Friedman turned him into a born-again christian too, right? Dave is the brainchild behind Megadeth, so to give Friedman the blame for Risk is a bit much. Who do you blame for The World Needs a Hero? Give me a break. Look, I get it. I GET IT, OK? You really dig Broderick, you're trying to get me to conform to your belief in who the best 2nd Megadeth guitarist is. I personally don't care that Friedman moved to Japan and plays rock now. If you ask me, Poland had more balls than Friedman, but Friedman had Poland beat with technique. You guys are the one's hung up on Friedman, I just made one comment about him in my post with the 44 minutes video. I'm not telling you to like what I like or think the way I do. If you really dig the guy and the new album, and you feel it's Megadeth's best work, that's cool, whatever. I'm sure Dave would be psyched to hear that. I've been digging the new album as well, but IN MY OPINION it doesn't match up to their earlier masterpieces. |
__________________________________________ [Oct 6,2009 6:50pm - mikeofdecrepitude ""] And before it gets mentioned, yes, Jason Becker was also the other guitarist in Cacophony and he too was also an amazing player before developing ALS. |

And giving him the credit for R.I.P. is a bit much as well. He was there for one great album (the first he played on), 2 meh albums, and a bunch of shit. And read some interviews man, it's not Dave that blames risk on Marty, Marty takes FULL CREDIT for that ginourmous turd. And for the record, NO, I really DON'T like Chris Broderick. I don't like Jag Panzer, I didn't like him in Nevermore, but I think he's far closer to what Dave needs right now that Marty is. Chris Poland is a better soloist than either, in my opinion, but is ALSO ill-suited for metal these days. |

Again, like I said, Dave IS Megadeth, first and foremost. I'm not even sitting here saying he should get either of those two back. ___________________________________ [Jul 8,2010 10:50am - arktouros ""] This is definitely Megadeth's fourth best album behind RIP, Countdown, and Peace Sells... it's been on in my car the past few days in the CD player (thanks to my ex-roommate graciously leaving a shiny new copy of it along with the rest of his garbage at my old apartment) and I've been listening to it off and on. I gotta admit I really didn't want to like it at first because I had the Rust In Peace or GTFO attitude, but this is classic Megadeth. Not obsessed with it by any means but it's so refreshing when cranked up. Mustaine's sneer is still mixed with thrash attitude coupled with badass lyrics, but a still gets away with the cliches in the choruses (When it's dog eat dog you are what you eat / something something bite the hand that feeds)... and then they totally redeem themselves when raging twin lead riffs really shift the songs to overdrive. Even the 'single' Baptized in a Firefight keeps me interested. My only problem with the album is the transition from Endgame to The Hardest Part of Letting Go... where we go from NWO thrash to heavy metal ballad mode in an instant. Except the ballad doesn't make me hit the skip button, it's actually well done. Here's to more excellent Megadeth albums. |
