a visit to the audiologist[views:5936][posts:41]______________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:20pm - the_reverend ""] wednesday, im going to go an get my hearing checked. then get a set of custom earplugs. i tell you what, spending $1000's on cabs, drums, and other bullshit, but then being too stupid to take care of your ears makes you a mega-idiot to the extreme. |
________________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:20pm - DestroyYouAlot ""] LOL @ ur hearing |
____________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:21pm - trioxin245 ""] what? |
_________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:21pm - Martins ""] I've been planning to get a pair of those but I keep not doing it. |
________________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:23pm - DestroyYouAlot ""] Was just saying last night; my father being a woodworker (and his never having worn ear protection ever, and therefore being deaf as fuck) made an impression on me pretty early - I've been (mostly) wearing plugs at shows since I was a wee laddy. Fucking hate when I forget'em onstage and my hearing ends up blown out halfway through a set. |
______________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:25pm - the_reverend ""] ditto. i stopped procrastinating last week and made an appointment. I think it's going to cost me about $165 total and then $30 for replacements. how much is your hearing worth? probably a lot more than that... unless you are two people 1) the girl sully from godsmack hit 2) the guy that keeps topping the anal cunt in fitchburg thread. |
_________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:27pm - ZenErik ""] I wear in ear headphones on the train and when I'm strolling around Boston. Highly recommended. I keep the volume on my mp3 player at 1. 2 at the very most... Out of 40. Although, you should be careful that you don't get hit by a car. :P I cannot play drums or go to shows without wearing ear plugs. I typically wear triple flanged, same with my in ears. They have a much nicer sound than any typical foam earplugs. More balanced instead of just killing highs. I'm sure customs would be even better, but I like what I have now. |
_________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:36pm - Martins ""] The thing with musicians earplugs though is that, instead of attenuating frequencies at different levels (like how earplugs make everything sound way bassier) it attenuates all frequencies evenly so that everything sounds the same, just quieter. I think I remember hearing they were like 100 dollars but I haven't been to an audiologist in like 10 years easily. Need to make an appointment so I can get those shits. My hearing is important to me. Thankfully I can still hear 16kHz. bennyhillifier |
_________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 5:40pm - ZenErik ""] Earplugs don't all make everything sound way bassier. Try triple flanged ones. The average foam plugs do. |
______________________________________ [Nov 22,2009 6:03pm - the_reverend ""] i love when you are at a show and everyone is yelling, but you can hear clear as day since most earplugs let more of the human voice through. |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:14am - brodown ""] I've been using custom plugs for years, and I hardly ever leave my house without them. Between practice, shows, and other loud events, I use them all the damn time. Well worth the expense! |
____________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:31am - arktouros ""] [img] $15 bucks on amazon.com. Reusable, washable...even though I keep losing them. You can hear every freq, just at a lower decibels. You guys are talking about expensive things. These are fantastic. |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:41am - Martins ""] Maybe those are the triple flanged ones Erik was talking about. I might need to snag some. |
______________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:45am - ouchdrummer ""] i use the ol fashioned ones that block out all sorts of sound unevenly, but still enough to prevent hearing damage. Good enough for me. |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:46am - Martins ""] tone > hearing Why compromise both? |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:47am - sxealex ""] i cant hear anything after it his 13khz no matter how loud i turn it |
______________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:48am - ouchdrummer ""] money+having to wash earplugs all the time. (remember, i wear earplugs >5 hours a day.) anything more than that is personal preference. |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 10:49am - Martins ""] I mean, in practice, you don't really need to hear frequencies that high. |
_____________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 11:43am - porphyria ""] I couldn't hear the freq. past 12-13khz....is that bad? |
_____________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 11:45am - porphyria ""] unless of course, maybe my speakers couldn't handle the freq. above that... |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 11:46am - Martins ""] Could be. |

_______________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 12:20pm - the_reverend ""] a lot of headphones start at 15-20khz. |
__________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 12:21pm - Martins ""] But that's not to say the frequency response is equal across that whole spectrum. It's probably an even response from 100 to 8 - 10k or so and the rest drops off slowly. |
_______________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 12:39pm - the_reverend ""] i have a pair of sony headphones that go to 12khz and they were over $100 |
_______________________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 1:20pm - IllinoisEnemaBradness ""] yeah, i think the crappy stereo syndrome may hinder hearing anything above 13K, which is where it dropped off for me. |
_____________________________________ [Nov 23,2009 1:24pm - The_Rooster ""] Truth. I get a hearing test every few months, and own a pair of the custom molded plugs... they're great. Probably the best $150 I've spent on anything music related. I really can't believe that people don't wear ear plugs at shows, practice, etc. It's really fucking crazy. I plug my ears when ambulances drive by fer cryin' out loud! |
______________________________ [Nov 23,2009 1:41pm - blue ""] Started wearing earplugs in the past year and a half, glad I did finally after killing my ears for the past 10+ years. |

________________________________ [Dec 7,2009 8:22pm - handy ""] I have always worn ear plugs for band practices/shows/ect. I wear plugs at work 9hrs a day, I get some nice ear wax going. |
__________________________________ [Dec 7,2009 9:10pm - narkybark ""] I have a pair of those custom ones but I don't like them as much as regular foam. They're nice if you know you're going to be popping them in and out 100 times in a row though. |
