The holocaust is used as jumping off point for discussion with gentiles about Jewish persecution. Since before the days of Christ there has been such a massive level of hatred, violence, and discrimination against the Jewish people yet for some reason non-Jews can't seem to wrap their heads around those thousands of years of complete bigotry and can only understand what happened last century, hence it gets brought up more than, say, the Pogroms in Russia.
