Anyone have any experience with these things? I wouldn't mind being able to tame my half stack a little for recording/solo practicing but maybe I'd be better off getting some sort of low watt head?

I'd say just get a low power head maybe. The hot plates are great but IMO work best with heads that NEED to get cranked (Plexis and the like).

If you're talking about for home recording, maybe get some instrument software?

Oh and what's the amp?

Peavey XXX head with a Basson cab. I only turn the master volume up to about 4 for most gigs and band practice sessions (with the channel volume at about 7) and it is very loud. I'm pretty happy with the tone but it sounds much better at this volume than it does at volumes that I'm comfortable practicing alone with imo. Are there any low power heads or tube combos that you would recommend?

The only low watt high gainer I can think of that's not super expensive would be the krank rev jr. I know epiphone is coming out with the valve senior, which will have separate gain and eq knobs but I have no clue how gainy it really gets.

Don't the triple XXXs have a power cut switch or am I mistaken?

Also, would you be interested In direct recording options?

The XXX does not have a power cut switch. I have one of those old POD 2.0 s which gets the job done but it's a little uninspiring to me. I don't know that I'd use it for anything other than demos for my own consumption. I have some experience using a friend's copy of Guitar Rig....pretty nice actually but I had better results recording with my half stack. I can get by with the POD for now...no immediate need, but I saw the hotplate on Craigslist and was curious.

If the hotplate is cheap enough I say go for it. Sounds like its what you want.
