using various tube heads, fender prosonic, diezel einstein, peavey valveking, 5150, mesa trip rec, ampeg vh140c. I'm using several guitars for tracking rhythm, leads, solos, and clean parts. LTD w/EMGs, Schecter w/EMGs, Agile w/EMGs, Fender Japanese strat style HSS, Fender Showmaster HH, Epiphone Dot Studio Semihollow, Samick Strat Style. The recording is gonna involve experimenting with different combinations til I find what I like and go from there.

Eliot's doing the engineering at the studio in Rockland. The Fender belongs to him or the studio. The ampeg is my normal live rig, solid state. It's fuckin ballsy too. Any tips on recording with him? as far as preproduction, him and I are pretty much on the same page and it's due to turn out really great; crisp and crushing.

Keep the gain manageable, and multi-track your parts. Layering will add some girth while you still maintain clarity.

When recording guitar, think of the layers as textures. You cannot pile on 5 layers of thick sloppy sludgy guitar together without it sounding muddy. Try to take different mic placements, eq settings, some thinner sounding tracks that accentuate different octaves or strings. Using different microphones also help as different mics are hyped or bumped at different places along the frequency spectrum. Using the same SM57 on every track will cause (as an example) a pile of 4khz as the mic has a presence boost built into the mic response.

Think of textures and layers.

When recording bass, I find using a mixture of DI and mic'ed yields me good results. When you get to the mixing stage, you can eq each to taste.

As this man says, when layering guitar, less gain is better.

3 Hi gain tracks layered = mud

3 Low to mid gain tracks layered = success.

Don't kill yourself trying to get everything "perfect." If there's obvious suck then redo the take, but don't automatically dismiss a good take just because you thought you could've hit that one squeal a little better or something along those lines. Overdoing the perfectionist route can take the live feel away from the recording and end up with sterile results.

Wow great advice, seems pretty consistent with what Eliot and I have been planning on in preproduction. Less gain with multiple tracking, multiple miking, various frequencies, etc. I think I'm doing each side with several mics and two rigs into an AB Box, probably ending up with 4 guitars tracks. It's gonna sound awesome, Keep it coming

I find a killer mic combination on guitar cabs to be a dynamic (like SM57) close to the grill and a ribbon mic at the same distance. I like a crisp condenser about 6 feet away or whatever sounds good to capture the sound developing. Also, mess with polarity settings on mic preamp or in the software on different channels... the bigger sound of the two is always the better one.

For bass if it's active leave it off to the di then eq your head to get the sound you like. Take the time and listen to the different speakers . There is always one that sounds better than the rest. I like a mix of di and mic'd . Guitars sound's like you've go the idea already double track, multi mics, not too much gain. And last take brakes get out of the studio smoke or drink and let your ears relax or you'll stop hearing what's realy going on

"i was there" c'mon man, I was there when my former bandmates would have 95% of the song done and I'd help structure a little. You have to actually write the riff to get credit, structuring don't count. If that's what JD means, if not:moe:
