There's no way you can get an accurate idea of how these songs are going to develop by listening to short samples with low sound quality. I'm not sure how I feel about the vocals yet, because it doesn't really sound like him. Musically, some of these samples reminded me of Aske.

I think too many people get worked up over how THEY want it to sound, rather than accepting the artists vision for what they've produced. Speaking generally, if you know how the new Burzum should sound and that's what you want to hear, then maybe you should write that album yourself (IMO).

Personally, I don't think the samples sounded too bad. A point to be made: If you took the beginning of "Key to the Gate", which starts off as raw, speedy black metal, and converted it into a 30 second sample; people will automatically assume that the rest of the song is going to follow a similar pattern. Now, after that part ends, KttG sounds like a entirely different song. I'm trying not to jump the gun here, so I'll just wait until it's released before I can give a fair judgment.

When dissection released the Maha Kali single/ep I was a little disappointed but still held a little hope. When reinkaos came out I found myself liking the ep more and not liking the album.

IMHO: so far it's mid paced, all the instruments sound excellent, i especially like the guitars and bass sound and the riffs are colorful, repetitive, melancholy. good mix of clean and harsh vocals. i sense a lot of Ukrainian stuff - great composition. drums are real. it's a little beyond typical. i don't speak Norwegian. i can't compare it to Engram, it's different.

I definitely don't hate Belus but it doesn't reach the standards he once set. It feels like there are some good ideas that unfortunately went underdeveloped. His anguished screams have been replaced with ordinary black metal vocals. There's no synth, a lack of subtleties, and the atmosphere suffers because of it. There are some really cool riffs contained within but from an aesthetic standpoint, he's lacking the key ingredients needed to allow Belus to stand among his timeless works.

I dunno, it's not bad. No "Aske" or "Filosofem" but better for sure than "Daudi Baldurs" and the other albums where he dinked around with a key-tar and everybody called it "atmosphere."
I mean, was anybody really expecting him to "save" black metal from where it's gone or "turn back the clock" to the old Norway sound? Fuhgeddaboudit.
Regardless it'll sell like hotcakes.

I downloaded it the other day. I've had some frustrating difficulties lately, long hours at work, and various stress that peaked with news of a second death in the family. There was an hour long drive to take, so the new Burzum was oddly perfect. Maybe it was because I was in the right state of mind, but I liked it.
For someone that hasn't played a guitar in years, he does a good job. The mid paced tempos work. I especially like the long droning/repetitious last instrumental.

I've been listening to this ALOT. I think it's a solid follow up to Filosofem, all the more making the ambient albums more important and brillant, seeing this is what came about after jailtime. It's a Burzum album. He never reinvented the wheel, you can feel a solid cross influence from the first 4 albums and his vocals are executed in production equally. I wasn't expecting another Hvis Lyset Tar Oss but this is a fucking solid album.

the standard was set almost 20 years ago, the last thing he did with guitar being 14 years ago. to think he could retain the magic of the first albums is foolish. this is an excellent progression and evolution, just as he has said all along it would be. he was driven by youthful naivety in the beginning of his career, this shows how much he has changed. I had high hopes for this and i don't feel it disappointed in any way.

Hah, it sounds nothing like Burzum but it does give me a similar feeling that I received from Varg's earlier albums. I'm not fanatical over Belus but Varg is still the man and he'll always remain my favorite black metal musician.

haha jutht kidding. i'm interested to hear it. though new "black metal" makes me gag, there are the few that stand out. see i don't even really consider Burzum to be "black metal" in the traditional sense, his work always achieved more. that's why i like Belus so much, i don't consider it anything other than a work of Burzum. i mean i'm not saying it's some revolutionary piece to fap over, but i don't think it's poorly done/rushed/sub-par in any way. it was what Varg wanted to do, and that's all that matters. kind of like new Darkthrone sound.
